Two LTPS Students to Compete in Next Week's Special Olympics 2014 USA Games

Lawrence Township Public Schools is proud to have two students registered in our district who have earned a spot on Team New Jersey and will compete in the Special Olympics 2014 USA Games.  The Games will take place in Lawrence Township and surrounding areas June 14-21, bringing thousands of visitors to the area.

Will Donahue will participate in four Track events (1500 meter and 800 meter individual races, 4x400 meter relay, and turbo javelin) and Nicole Lusardi will race in a Cycling event.

Qualifying for tryouts for Team New Jersey began a year ago.  To be considered, athletes had to medal in at least one event in June 2013 at the SONJ (Special Olympic New Jersey) Summer Games at The College of New Jersey.  Subsequently there were tryout sessions and months of training for those who were selected.  And now...the Games are about to begin!  Good luck Will and Nicole!

Students in Joe Jamison's 5th grade class at Lawrence Intermediate S

chool (LIS) were ready for prime time at the beginning of May as they

L to R: Dave Adam, LIS principal;
Sugata Mitra; Joe Jamison

were filmed as part of a documentary series entitled The Work Wonders Project for Microsoft.  Mr. Jamison's students were tapped for this production due to Jamison's use of the Self-Organized Learning Environment (SOLE) program in his c

lassroom. SOLEs are child-centered activities that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills, whilte student learn how to ask questions in order to take ownership of their learning.

The documentary campaign is a three-episode series that highlights the collaboration of two senior experts in the field of education technology.  The series documents the collaboration of Adam Braun and Dr. Sugata Mitra on their initiative to implement a cloud-based education program at schools built by the Pencils of Promise foundation.  Filming for The Work Wonders Project ranged from being onsite in Ghana to footage taken in Jamison's classroom to capture the SOLE program in action.  Braun and Mitra joined the LIS 5th graders as the documentary cameras rolled.
