Natasha Vargas competes in Poetry Out Loud National Finals TONIGHT!
View live Lawrence High senior Natasha Vargas tonight in Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest Finals at 7PM. Natasha is representing New Jersey (and Lawrence High!) and is one of nine contestants to make tonight's finals in Washington, D.C. and vie for the national title.
Natasha has a full day today: a Congressional breakfast, interviews, rehearsals, and then...the big event!
What was the road for contestants to tonight's finals?
On April 29 contestants (53) representing all states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands competed in one of three Regional Semifinals. Natasha, representing New Jersey, was one of 18 students in Region 1.
Each contestant recited two poems and then, judges selected eight (8) students per region to recite a third poem. Natasha was one of the eight to advance within Region 1. After third poem recitations, judges selected three students plus a runner up from each of the three Regions...thus, nine finalists... to compete in tonight's finals. Proudly, Natasha is one of the nine!
This competition began with 365,000 students nationwide competing within their high schools to advance to regional, then state, and finally, the Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest.
Wish Natasha luck (#POL14) and tune in tonight!
