School Closings & Emergency Make-Up Days
We built three "emergency closing dates" into the 2013-2014 school calendar in the event we needed to close schools due to inclement weather or other reasons during the school year. So far, we have missed two days of school due to weather conditions: December 10 and January 3. As indicated on the calendar linked here, we will make up those days on May 23 and June 6. Thus school will be in session on those dates. The calendar is also posted on our website under the District Calendar Quick Link.
Board of Education Reorganizes and Recognizes Student/Staff Achievements

January 6 was a busy night for the Lawrence Board of Education (BOE).

The BOE first held its annual reorganization meeting during which members elected by Lawrence voters in the November 2013 election were sworn into office.  Dana Drake (one-year term) and Patricia "Pepper" Evans (three-year term) are new to the BOE.  Incumbents Michael Horan (three-year term) and Laura Waters (three-year term) remain on the BOE.  BOE members elected Kevin Van Hise as their President and Laura Waters as Vice President. BOE members (alphabetical order):

 Deborah Cherry

 Dana Drake

 Patricia (Pepper) Evans

 Jo Ann Groeger

 Michael Horan

 William (Bill) Michaelson

 Thomas Patrick, Ph.D.

 Kevin Van Hise, Esq.

 Laura Waters, Ph.D.

Following reorganization, the BOE moved to Lawrence High's auditorium for student and staff recognitions. Learn here who the BOE recognized and for what.

BOE Receives Special Recognition

After recognitions the BOE conducted its monthly business meeting during which they received a surprise recognition.  January is National Board of Education Recognition Month and LTPS schools alternate annually in preparing a special recognition for BOE members as an appreciation for their service.   At the meeting Maria Raimondo, Lawrenceville Elementary LES) art specialist, and two LES third graders, presented a beautiful mosaic (in photo) to the BOE. Ms. Raimondo designed the piece and all LES third graders contributed to making the art entitled "We All Grow Together." The tree trunk represents the Board of Education and the seven branches symbolize our seven schools.

Parent Math Info Session for Grades K-5 on
January 29

Puzzled by your child's math program?  We can help!

At last November's Community Conversation, parents requested help with learning math as it's now taught based on the Common Core State Standards. You asked...we listened!

K - 5th grade parents are invited to an informative work session set for Wednesday, January 29 in the Lawrence High Commons from 6:00-7:30 p.m. The session will outline changes in our elementary math program since implementing the Common Core State Standards and will support parent understanding.  Parents will have the opportunity to work with district educators on the "newest" methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and problem solving. Please register here so we can plan for you.

New Jersey adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as part of the CCSS Initiative coordinated by the Council of Chief States School Officers and the National Governor's Association in partnership with other national organizations. We aligned Lawrence's curriculum to these standards over the last several years.  Implementing our Go Math program in 2012 has provided additional resources for students and staff that are designed to advance student understanding of these concepts. The CCSS require students to apply concepts in a variety of ways and to apply critical thinking skills to the learned math concepts.

Project VOICE Performs/Teaches at Middle School
Phil Kaye

Phil Kaye, world renown spoken word poet, visited Lawrence Middle School (LMS) on December 11. After graduating from Brown University, Phil began traveling the world in order to teach, publish, perform, and coach. He is currently co-director of Project VOICE, along with Sarah Kay, and performs at many colleges and high schools. While visiting LMS, Phil gave two performances. Students especially enjoyed Phil's performance of "The Geiko Gecko," "Repetition," and "Hip Hop Lullaby." After performing, Phil met with Literary Nation, the creative writing team of the LMS literary magazine, and conducted a poetry workshop. Students appeared engaged and excited as he invited students to share three things they know to be true; many hilarious anecdotes pursued. Seventh grader Stephanie Luo said, "Phil taught me how to use sensory language and write more creatively." With Phil's guidance, students composed hate or love letters, using only sensory language.

Petrina Pappas, LMS language arts teacher, received the Lawrence Township Education Foundation grant that funded this project.

LES Sculptures Displayed at Lawrence Library

Maria Raimondo, Lawrenceville Elementary's (LES) art specialist, led 2nd graders in Ms. Finochiaro and Ms. Manning's classes in a sculpture project, now on display at the Lawrence Library through January 20. After learning how sculptures are made, students chose a variety of scrap materials such as cardboard, plastic caps, rope, foam board, buttons, and wood. Students arranged their selections and glued them onto a base to create a low relief sculpture which was then covered with aluminum foil. Children next rubbed the metal to reveal individual shapes which students further defined using a colorful array of markers.
