Mr. Smith Relates Stories Behind WWII Events
Rick Smith, retired LTPS teacher, visited Lawrence Intermediate School (LIS) on December 11 to address 6th grade history students. Mr. Smith's presentation on WWII enhanced students' background knowledge of the war by relating stories behind the events from an experienced history teacher.  The students are preparing to read Holocaust novels in their language arts classes.
Rider Professor Outlines History's Rights & Responsibilities

To coincide with their research projects for the 2014 National History Day theme of "Rights and Responsibilities in History," students in Lawrence Middle School's (LMS) Enrichment Challenge Program were treated to a visit and lecture by Rider University history professor Brooke Hunter, who shared her knowledge and research about slavery and abolition in Mercer County. Students learned about New Jersey's Abolition Act and investigated primary resources of slave birth records that were written by Mercer County property owners. Priscilla Taylor, G&T specialist, coordinated the visit.

LES Sends Wishes of Peace for Holidays
First graders sing "Shalom," which translated means "have peace."

Music filled the air at Lawrenceville Elementary School (LES) on Friday, December 13 for the annual winter holiday concert under the direction of LES's new music teacher Daniel Beal. Children in grades one, two and three performed musical selections based on the theme of "We Wish You Peace." Festive "toe-tapping" songs focusing on unity, peace and spreading joy were featured, reinforcing the school's character education mission. Featured songs were performed in four different languages, Spanish, Hebrew, Swahili and English.

The stage was adorned with holiday decorations with musical notes and doves created by the children and Maria Raimondo, art specialist. Ed Francis, physical education specialist, directed lighting and sound. While the children sang, danced, and played rhythm instruments and chimes, Mr. Beal accompanied them on the piano.
