Artwork by Mrs. Melissa Panter's 3rd grade art classes at Eldridge Park School (EP) is on display at the Lawrence Branch of the Mercer County Library for the month of December. Students created Pennsylvania Dutch barn designs using primary and secondary triad color schemes and radial symmetry.

Collaborative artwork created by Mrs. Panter and EP 2nd graders is on display at 110 CHURCH, a professional art gallery in Old City, Philadelphia. The front pages of their creations are on display online here, while one is also featured in a printed publication here. Mrs. Panter will attend a reception at the gallery on December 14.
Slackwood School Selects Peer Mediators

Fifteen third-grade students at Slackwood Elementary School were selected as Peer Mediators for the 2013-14 school year. Dedicated to helping others solve problems, the mediators give up one recess period each week to learn skills needed to perform mediations at school.

The selection process began with interested students receiving applications in a guidance class introducing conflict resolution to all third graders. They had one week to complete the application with their parents and return it to Melanie Seaman, school counselor. Once all applications were received and reviewed, the mediators were selected.

LIS Students Raise Funds for PEI Kids

Four Lawrence Intermediate School (LIS) 6th graders recently presented PEI Kids (Prevention Education, Inc.) with funds they raised in response to the abuse and death of Minnesota Vikings Running Back Adrian Peterson's 2 year-old son.

Emily Giuliano, Grace Neuger, Kaitlyn Maloney, and Alexandra Kwasniewski initiated and implemented an awareness and fundraising campaign for PEI Kids, the local child abuse prevention and intervention non-profit organization. Over the past two years, they addressed several local social issues, including homelessness and poverty, with their efforts to support local non-profit HomeFront. "We started this because we wanted to make a difference," said Ms. Giuliano. "We wanted to give back to those who are less fortunate, who don't get as much love as they should."  Read more about their campaign here.

LHS Career Academy Students Get Glimpse of Career Paths

Students from all over Mercer County, including Lawrence High School (LHS) Career Academy students, attended Mercer County Community College's first Youth Symposium on October 8. The Symposium was presented by the Youth Investment Council of the Workforce Investment Board.

Representatives from seven different industries were present to inform students about their fields. The symposium gave students an opportunity to expand their thinking and learn about different career paths.

Maurice Coleman, New York City market executive at Bank of America, delivered the keynote speech setting the tone for the rest of the day. His inspiring story taught the importance of hard work, discipline, and dedication. Padma Arvind, director of the New Jersey Health Care Talent Network, gave a follow-up presentation about careers in health care.

Afterwards, students split into groups to listen to the other Talent Network Coordinators speak about advanced manufacturing; financial services, transportation, logistics, and distribution; technology and entrepreneurship; retail, hospitality, and tourism; and life sciences.
