NEXT Step Workshop
College:
Scholarships, FAFSA and more - oh, my! 3:45
Think you might want to attend college? Wondering how you can pay for it? Tori will lead you through an interactive, fun workshop to help you learn more and make the best choice for you to reach your goals!
Are you wondering why is OUTreach holding a NEXT Step Class twice each week?
Fascinating fact: LGBT youth are THREE TIMES more likely to drop out of high school; in 2012 only 10% of OUTreach youth went on to attend college. Why? Not because LGBT youth aren't incredibly smart, but for a variety of reasons, including lack of family support, bullying, lack of positive role models, and low self-esteem. OUTreach has committed substantial energy and funds to assist the amazing youth we work with so that they may graduate high school, attend college if they wish, and find fulfilling, meaningful, well-paying jobs.

Jackson's Health Corner

Health and Wellness Coordinator Jackson says:
"Eating better doesn't have up mean giving up all of your favorite foods. Make small substitutions such as plain Greek yogurt go sour cream or avocado for mayo. They're delicious and only a fraction of the calories and fat."
Health Correspondant (and amazing OUTreach youth) Jessica
will be writing weekly columns for the newsletter and website.
This week:
Be a little selfish: Take a BREAK Already!
Mental health is just as important as physical health. A lot of times when you get caught up in life and your daily requirements it's difficult to remember the things you need. Eating healthy and exercising are only two parts of wellness. The third part of wellness is doing things that make you happy or inspire you.

In the past few months I've been in an artistic rut. Art makes me happy and when I'm not doing it I really feel lost. Art is something that just comes naturally, but recently nothing great has emerged. A few days ago I realized why. I hadn't been doing things I liked to do. My agenda: School, musical rehearsal, eat healthy, make time to exercise, sleep.
The musical ended up being really great for me but it took up way too much of my time. I didn't watch any movies (literally my life) or read at all. I also hadn't been to a concert since October 2012. One thing all these things have in common is they inspire me. They help me make my art, be successful and happy.
A few nights ago I had attended a concert. The venue was beautiful. It was covered in art and graffiti. Aside from the bands, my focus was fixed on the walls. I wondered how the artists textured something a certain way. I wanted to know every technique. I wanted to figure it out, hoping to attempt something similar later.
The music was amazing, as well. It was a breath of fresh air. I'd been running and running; I hadn't stopped to catch my breath. I'd been so worried about pleasing the people around me; I didn't take the time to stop and do something I wanted to do. Sometimes you have to be a little selfish so you don't lose your inspiration. It's good to treat yourself to small things when there is a lot of overwhelming things to do.
When you take breaks you have a more positive outlook. You don't have to have an all work mindset. You can have some play every once and a while. That's something that has been difficult for me. When I'm not doing something I "should" be doing I get stress. I need to loosen up and be happy in the moment. Everyone needs too. Besides, when you are happy, everything else comes easy.
Bio:
My name is Jess. I am an aspiring filmmaker with too many ideas. I enjoy bike riding on summer mornings. I like to eat healthy most of the time but you can never go wrong with a great slice of pizza. I really take pleasure in attending concerts and connecting with music of all sorts. I am very passionate about my school life and I am very self-motivated. In my free time I watch movies to better understand film-making and how I would like to make my films someday. I'm Jess and I'm pretty cool.
