2015 Mentor of the Year (and Medical Mutual employee), Dan Hollowell with his mentee, Mario Davenport
|
However, Medical Mutual's involvement with College Now extends far beyond its financial contributions. For the last five years, Medical Mutual has hosted students who are participating in College Now summer programs in its downtown office so that our students have the opportunity not only to see a large corporate headquarters first-hand but also to speak directly with Medical Mutual's college interns about their paths and how pursuing postsecondary education leads to great opportunities such as working at Medical Mutual.
In addition, 20 Medical Mutual employees are currently serving as mentors for College Now scholarship recipients as part of our innovative and impactful mentoring program that pairs each of traditional-age scholarship recipients in a one-to-one match with volunteers from across our community. In fact, one of these Medical Mutual employees was selected as one of College Now's 2015 mentors of the year.

College Now Mentees Broaden Horizons by Studying Abroad
The Mentoring Program is excited to share that eight of its students are currently studying abroad! We are so proud of these students for challenging themselves and stepping outside their comfort zones. Jessica Howell, a junior, had this to say about her experience thus far: "After being in Heredia, Costa Rica for a month now I have learned a tremendous amount. Every day is a new adventure. On a typical day I have three delicious meals prepared by my "Tico Mom". The family I live with only speaks Spanish so it could be a challenge getting my point across. It gets easier with each day here. The weather here is perfect. On weekends there are gorgeous beaches, national parks and volcanoes to explore. I have never felt more in touch with nature and less in touch with my American customs. Studying abroad in the 'pura vida' lifestyle is an experience like no other."
Thanks for letting us share your experience, Jessica!
Are you a mentor or a mentee with a great story? We'd love to highlight you or your pair in the next newsletter! Contact Corie Wright at cwright@collegenowgc.org with your fabulous doings.
