FACULTY GETS LAST LAUGH AGAINST REGIONAL CHAMPS
The ComedySportz Regional Champions were in action against the faculty last Thursday night and the laughs were nonstop. Despite being the best team in the region, the students couldn't fend off the faculty. The faculty kept its win streak going, but they were humbled by the fierce competition from the Regional Champs!

A big thank you to the coaches, refs, sponsors, faculty, and parents who made this season the best yet!
COMMUNITY-BASED VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTION LUNCHEON
Westside High School's Community-Based Vocational Instruction program (CBVI) held its annual employer appreciation luncheon.

The employees and businesses that participated were Rudy Ramirez (Chick-fil-A), Azalia Mathis and Stephanie Rhodes (Daily Elementary), Jennifer Neal and Darrion Gibson (Holiday Inn), Pamela Officer and Karen Luik (Kendall Public Library), Evelyn Ordonez (Kroger), Olivia Brooks and Theresa Gillum (Parkway Place Retirement Community), and AnCel Wilson (Walgreen's).

We would like to thank all our partners for participating in the CBVI program and for allowing us to train our students at their places of business. We are also grateful to our partners for instilling in our students the encouragement and confidence that someday they could be employed.

Additional thanks go to Jennifer Neal and Darrion Gibson for catering, decorating, and allowing us to hold this special event at Holiday Inn. We greatly appreciate Cakes by Gina, who donated the beautiful and delicious cake. AnCel Wilson from Walgreen's brought 30 red noses for our students and parents, and because of Mr. Wilson, we were able to participate in the Red Nose Pictures. A huge thank you to Evelyn Ordonez from Kroger's for choosing and arranging the beautiful bouquets that were given to the parents.

Thanks to Ms. Foust, Mrs. Molloy, and Mrs. Seda (parents), and Amanda Mollet (Itinerant Transition Coach) for the gift cards that were given to the employers. Congratulations  to our students: Chris English, who was accepted into the HISD/H.E.A.R.T Program, Gabriel Mateo, who was accepted into the HCC VAST Academy, Juliette Molloy, who was accepted into the HISD/HCC Transition Program, and Jonathan Carpinteyro, who was hired at Corner Bakery. Without the support of our school staff, parents, and community, the CBVI program would not be where it is today.

TEACHER ADDS ENCOURAGEMENT AND ISN'T AFRAID TO SHOW IT!
Teachers want their students to do well, but one Calculus teacher wants his students to achieve the highest grade. Mr. French has made it a tradition to show his students that their goal is a 5, which is the highest score that may be earned on an AP test.

How does he let them know a five should be in their heads?...by putting it on his!

Mr. French prepares the canvas by growing his hair throughout the school year. Before AP exams, students help shave his head and dye his hair. What better way to let his students know that their success is important to him.

AP WORLD HISTORY BRINGS BLAST FROM THE PAST
From George Washington, to Rosie the Riveter, to Ruth Bader Ginsberg - last week you never knew who you might bump into in the halls of Westside! AP History classes enjoyed presentations by their classmates.

WESTSIDE WELLNESS: SUMMER SELF-CARE
As we ease into summer and out of our school year routines, we may lose sight of our health and personal growth goals. By developing a self-care routine, we can reconnect with our goals and stay aware of the areas we want to improve in our lives, even without a structured schedule. Here are a few tips for creating simple summer self-care practices that will decrease stress and boost motivation!
  1. Morning rituals allow you to start off in a positive way, setting intentions for the day. Choose an activity such as stretching, journaling, or cooking that you can commit to beginning your day with.
  2. Mindfulness is nonjudgmental awareness of the present moment. At any time during the day, you can take a moment to notice the simple things in your environment and take a few deep breaths. This is especially helpful during hectic or fast-paced days.
  3. Pick your favorite time of day (morning, afternoon, evening) and commit to going for a walk and focusing on your surroundings. You may want to take a water bottle or smoothie with you!
  4. Try to eat more slowly, truly enjoying the flavor and texture of your meal. Not only will this create a more enjoyable dining experience, but you may also find that you fill up on less food when you pay more attention as you eat.
  5. At the end of each day, write a list of what you are thankful for (in a journal or "Notes" on your phone). Writing a gratitude list helps us connect with what is going well in our lives, and it can be very helpful to refer back to during tough times.
Try one or all of these tips, or experiment and create your own Self-Care Menu that you can use anytime. Have a wonderful summer!
CHOICES CORNER: THE END OF THE BEGINNING
The school year has come to an end, but I will be back next year! Although I will miss the graduating seniors and senior PTO parents, I must say it has been a year of great and enriched experiences.

I'd like to thank the entire staff, student body, PTO, and the community for welcoming me with open arms during my first year at Westside. As a result of an amazing school year, I am excited for the new projects that will happen for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year!

Also, I will be on campus during summer school hours to provide counseling and support services email me elumpkin@councilonrecovery.org or stop by my office in room N144 to make an appointment. If I don't get a chance to see you again, I'd like to say it was my pleasure and thank you, thank you, and thank you! -Ms. Lumpkin
