WESTSIDE WELLNESS: HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS
| |
Part of staying healthy includes having positive social interactions with others, and romantic relationships can have a major impact on emotional health. Often when we are in the midst of a relationship, we may not fully recognize the ways in which it is impacting other areas of our lives. It can be helpful to step back and assess to see if you have the basic qualities of a healthy relationship.
- Trust and Honesty: Both people in a relationship should be truthful and be able to count on one another.
- Respect: A healthy relationship is based on mutual respect, and each person should be able to listen and acknowledge the values and boundaries of the other person. The individual needs to be able to pursue his or her own interests without criticism.
- Equality: Fairness is important in a healthy relationship. Listening well and offering compromises are the keys to maintaining equality.
- Communication: Each person must clearly communicate his or her thoughts and feelings in order to avoid misunderstandings and conflict.
If you recognize all of these qualities in your relationship, it is likely a healthy one. For further resources on healthy relationships, conflict resolutions, and how to identify more serious issues such as abuse, go to www.loveisrespect.org.

CHOICES CORNER: PHARM PARTYING
| |
What's in your medicine cabinet? You may be thinking 'Why does this even matter?' or 'Who even cares?'. However, it does matter and we should all care. It's countdown for summer and for many teens this may mean spending lots of hours in the home. Teens may get bored or restless and come up with ways to "have fun" like having or going to a pharm party. What's that? Pharm parties can happen at someone's house where pharmaceuticals of both prescription and over-the-counter medicines are emptied into a large bowl mixed in with the other people's medicines that were brought from their home and heedlessly consumed. Scary right? Well, it doesn't have to be scary if you safeguard your prescriptions by following a few steps.
It is totally appropriate to discuss why it is your job only to have access to medicines. In this way you are reinforcing the family code of why drug use is not accepted unless it is prescribed to your teen and even still it will be monitored.
Know how many pills are in your prescription bottle and keep track of your refills. In order to know if your teen is taking your meds you have to monitor and know what's in your medicine cabinet.
If you're not able to monitor your meds or you feel like that's too much of a task to monitor then secure your meds in places only you know about. Please do not keep them in obvious hiding places like in a cabinet or purse. If your meds are in obvious places make sure they are locked away where only you have the key and if it's a safe only you have the code. Yes, some of our teens have prescriptions from the doctor and those meds should be in the same place locked away.
It's not uncommon to keep expired prescriptions in the medicine cabinet unknowingly however, be sure to mail, flush or throw away all expired medicine. Yes, you may mail your meds to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and they will properly dispose of the prescriptions for you.
Following these four steps will safe guard your teen from even thinking about contributing to a pharm party that's all about mixing different pills to "have fun" with friends. As mature adults we know that concocting different meds are dangerous but we have to show our teens by being their frontal lobe and taking the initiative in following the steps listed above for their safety.
On another note, thank you to the PTO and all of the parents that took the time out of their busy schedule to come out last Friday to the roundtable breakfast, your presence was greatly appreciated!
