It was a great effort by everyone and the teachers were thrilled to receive their wishes. You can still donate if you like by clicking here.

MAYOR TURNER GETS POLLUTION LESSON
You never know who you might run into at Houston's Earth Day.

When you become the teacher, sometimes you get some surprise students. That's why it's important to always be on top of your game.

This was the case for several NHS and Environmental Science students. They gave a quick lesson to Mayor Turner about pollution in our bayous.

DANCING WITH THE DINOSAURS
Prom 2016 was a spectacular event for all. With a change of venue from previous years, Houston's Museum of Natural Science was transformed into the hottest places to be!

The Senior Parents helped with ticket sales, volunteered at the prom and some of them even pulled an "all nighter" to work the After-Prom event. There also has to be an enormous thank you to Westside's administration and staff who always volunteer to work prom because they love being with our Wolves and making sure that our students have a fun and worry free night.

Many thanks to Ms. Kindred, senior class coordinator, and Ms. Pinzon, the PTO representative to the senior class and our incredible Senior Parents who worked their magic to make sure that our Prom was a huge success.

Because of all of these efforts, our Wolves had a night to remember.  They came dressed to perfection and danced the night away, with of course, the dinos! At the stroke of midnight, the party didn't stop, as they headed off to Dave & Busters for the After-Prom Party. Unbelievable prizes were given away throughout the early morning as the revelers continued to celebrate their upcoming graduation. Many incredible memories from this special night will be shared over the years to come!

SOFTBALL BEGINS PLAYOFF RUN FRIDAY
The Wolves will begin the playoffs against Katy High School, this Friday.  The first pitch is at 7 p.m., at Delmar.

This past Saturday was Senior Day for the softball team. The seniors pictured from left to right are Kierston Dixon, Mary Alex Krosby, and Abigail Aldis.
DANCE CONCERT RESCHEDULED FOR WEDNESDAY

SPECIAL OLYMPICS HAS GREAT DAY!

MICHELLE ALVA - EYE ON HOUSTON:
HIGH SCHOOL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
This is our ongoing series feature on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography exhibit, running through this Sunday, May 1. It features several of our photography students. Make sure you drop by the Museum of Fine Arts and check out all of the amazing work.
I decided to drive and walk around Museum District and Montrose neighborhoods to find some interesting representations that best embodies Houston. I captured this image in the afternoon when the sun perfectly set and gleamed at this electrical post that had this humorous piece of street art. It's interesting that this was found near Montrose and Museum District since these two areas are really significant for their art culture.

I decided to go through the Museum District and Montrose neighborhoods in the afternoon on a weekday to find an interesting representations of what best embodies Houston. I was walking through a bridge and I looked over and saw a girl with an alien backpack and a bob haircut just sitting down overlooking Houston's traffic. The girl really captivated what is mostly common to find around these neighborhoods and what the youth is interested in. The background really sets the setting of the urban side of Houston, with Downtown Houston's traffic and graffiti in high unimaginable places.

CHOICES CORNER: WHAT ARE THE PROS?
Marijuana comes from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa; the active ingredient is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). When ingested, this plant contains almost 400 different chemicals that flow through the blood stream and to the brain. Although some teens may think everyone is using marijuana, research shows that there has been a decline in youth engaging in marijuana use. That's right! Westside included! According to our latest survey, Westside students who reported using the drug showed a 15% decrease in current use from 2015 to 2016! Way to go Westside!

You may think to yourself, "I know someone that uses and they seem fine to me." Remember, marijuana effects everyone differently at different times. The short-term effects of marijuana include: low motivation, problems with memory and learning, distorted perceptions, challenges with problem solving, decrease in motor coordination, increased heart rate, dry mouth, and anxiety. The long-term effects of marijuana use include: chronic cough, bronchitis, poor motivation, long-term memory problems, and financial problems. Marijuana can also induce mental illnesses that could have been never experienced such as depression, personality changes, and psychosis.

Remember, the last part of your brain to develop is the prefrontal cortex which governs our executive functioning skills that includes empathy, decision-making, judgement, impulse control, emotion regulation, frustration tolerance, abstract conceptual understanding, and problem solving. Let's continue to protect our brains and allow them to reach their full potential without being inhibited by marijuana and other substances. Let your choices work for you!

If you know someone who is struggling with a high-risk behavior, contact Ebony Lumpkin, Westside Choices Counselor, email me at elumpkin@councilonrecovery.org, or drop by N144.
