ELENA CARRASCO - EYE ON HOUSTON:
HIGH SCHOOL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY

This is our ongoing series feature on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography exhibit, running through May 1. It features several of our photography students. Make sure you drop by the Museum of Fine Arts and check out all of the amazing work.
This photo was taken at a cancer walk in Houston. The people walking in the photo are walking for a cause, but at the same time they are littering which is a whole other problem that needs to be addressed. They are doing a good thing by going on the walk and raising money for cancer, but at the same time they are ruining the earth. This really captures Houston because the people who live here are so oblivious to what is happening around them. They do one good thing and think it's enough, what's going to happen after the walk is done? Another organization will come clean up after them. It is a never ending cycle.
I feel very strongly about this photo because it is a ghost bike, which are bikes posted up all around Houston where a biker got hit and killed by a car. The bikes are stripped of chains and brakes so they won't be stolen, spray painted white, given flowers, and a plaque with the victim's name printed on it. I took the photo at this angle so you could see the street, showing that even though someone died life goes on. A lot of people don't know what ghost bikes really mean, and I think it should be more widely known. As I was taking this photo, a man stopped and asked me to email the photo to him and when he gave me his business card I noticed that he had the same last name of the victim on the bike.

WESTSIDE WELLNESS: SIMPLE TIPS FOR CLEAN EATING

There are so many fad diets and rules for eating that contradict one another. This can cause confusion and anxiety when narrowing down meal options. Let's break down meal planning in a simple and realistic way! - Choose foods with ingredients that you recognize (and can pronounce!), and aim for items with 5 ingredients or less.
- Limit sugar as much as possible. The higher it is listed in ingredients (often as "fructose" or "corn syrup") the more of it there is.
- Between meals, fruits and nuts serve as portable and energizing snacks!
- Structure meals with a serving of lean protein, lots of veggies, healthy fats (avocado, olive oil or coconut oil), and a small portion of whole grains (whole wheat toast, brown rice).
Words to live by: "If you can plant it, pick it, or catch it, then it is a whole food!" -Todd McCullough, founder of TMAC Fitness

CHOICES CORNER: SYNTHETIC MARIJUANA

Synthetic cannabinoids are a large family of compounds that were initially created to replicate the active ingredient in marijuana to provide an alternative to pain relievers. Scientists were attempting to create a safe marijuana, but instead, produced a deadly laboratory concoction that has killed hundreds of unknowing adolescents. Synthetic marijuana consists of human-made chemicals that are sprayed on dried herbs and marketed to youth with names like: "Scooby Snacks, KLIMAX, Spice, K-2, and Black Mamba".
Many people are unaware of the risks and how many chemicals are being consumed while using synthetic marijuana. There are more than 200-300 chemicals found in one Spice or K-2 packet. The symptoms brought on by synthetic use include: seizures, tremors, headaches, kidney injuries, intense hallucinations, paranoia, nausea and vomiting, muscle spasms, stroke, severe anxiety and agitation, violent behavior, hypertension, rapid heartbeat, and death. There has been a 220% increase in emergency room admissions related synthetic use.
FACT: Did you know that using synthetic marijuana is a gateway to the use of other drugs and alcohol? Using multiple substances increases your chances of becoming an addict and struggling with addiction or alcoholism later in life.
