AP TESTING PREADMINISTRATION

It's that time again! AP Preadministration is just around the corner for all Westside AP students!

AP Preadministration is where students fill out necessary information on their answer documents in preparation for the exams in May.  Doing this process in April saves at least 30 minutes at the beginning of each AP exam!

On April 13, all sophomores taking an AP exam will be dismissed from their third period classes at 10:40.  They will report to the Commons.  Students will have a notification from their assigned AP teacher that will serve as their passes to Preadministration.  The whole process will take place during Guidance.

All juniors and seniors taking an AP exam will complete the same process on April 14. They will be dismissed from their second period classes at 10:40.

Mr. Andrade's AP Human students and Ms. Martinez's AP Spanish Language students will do Preadministration in their classes the week of April 11.

WESTSIDE WEAR MAKES DEBUT THURSDAY
FRESHMEN VISIT UNIVERSITIES
As part of HISD's College Bound culture, several HISD campuses were selected to send freshman students to visit college campuses.  Westside was selected as one of those campuses; the opportunity was offered to all of our first time freshmen.
Half of our freshmen visited the campuses of HBU, Lamar, Texas A&M, and the University of Houston.  The other half of our freshmen class are visiting tomorrow.  At each of the universities, the students get a tour of the campus, classrooms, dorms, and even the cafeteria. Our freshmen also hear from the college administrators about the practical side of college, like ways to apply and pay for school.
STUDENTS ENJOY WEATHER IN TWO WALKS
Easter Seals hosted Walk With Me event ths past Saturday at the Houston Zoo. Easter Seals is an organization that supports individuals with disabilities and their families by connecting them with resources, training, job opportunities, as well as social events and camps. Senior Robert Dowdell (#1) is our Easter Seals Ambassador who participated in the 5K walk with a crowd of supporters.

Afterward, Robert made his way to the University of Houston to meet up with our Best Buddies club for another walk. The annual Friendship Walk celebrates friendship without boundaries. The Westside Best Buddies group also included parents, friends, alumni, and our students with and without disabilities.

INERTIA PUTS ON MEMORABLE PERFORMANCES
The Inertia Dance Company's "First & Last" concert had sold out performances and excited audiences, this past weekend. Check out a few photos below from the show and remember auditions for the 2016-17 company are April 25-28.

YAARESI GARCIA - EYE ON HOUSTON:
HIGH SCHOOL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
This is our ongoing series feature on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography exhibit, running through May 1. It features several of our photography students. Make sure you drop by the Museum of Fine Arts and check out all of the amazing work.
As I walked down the street from my work, I noticed this cute old fashioned, little fair located in front of the Northwest Mall parking lot. I started to think about how far Houston's entertainment has gone. Now one of our biggest attractions is the Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo. What happened to Astroworld? That was the one place that represented some fun history in Houston. But now, we've come back to some of these "blink of an eye" carnivals in which you can find yourself on top of the ferris wheel next to highway ads and cars speeding by. This is a far cry from what Astroworld used to be.
CHOICES CORNER: MARIJUANA & BRAIN DEVELOPMENT
Did you know that your brain is not fully developed until about the age of 24-25? Our brain begins to develop as soon as we are born, but major structural changes begin at the age 11 for girls, and 12 for boys. This is when our adult brain, the prefrontal cortex, begins growing. There is a specific process that occurs called myelination and synaptic pruning.

During synaptic pruning, the synapses that are not being used are pruned away to make room for synapses that are needed for resourcefulness. Confused? Think of it this way, when you first got to high school or middle school and learned your way around, did you realize that you took the long way instead? If you want to make it to class on time every day, you would use the shortest and quickest distance by following that route more often than not. Your brain cancels out other routes to class that are not going to help you get to class on time. The more you use a route, the quicker your brain gets you to where you need to go! We call this the "use it or lose it" principle.

The more your brain uses a string of neurons, brain cells, the more efficient it becomes for that particular skill. The synaptic process shapes the brain and makes it more efficient and molding it in response to a person's experiences and activities.

Sounds pretty easy right? However, if you are using marijuana, this will interfere with your brain development. The more healthy choices your brain makes, the more long strings of brain cells you will have for good decision-making. Marijuana arrests this development. This makes the type of activities teens are involved in very important! If you choose to make healthy choices, you have the power to shape your own brain in a healthy way. However, if you choose to engage in drugs and or alcohol, your chances of delaying your brain development are high and negative consequences will follow.

Fact: Engaging in drugs and/or alcohol will stunt one's psycho-social maturity level. This means if you engaged in these behaviors at 14 and stop at 17, you are as mature as a 14 year old. However, there is time to catch up if you stop now! In fact, a large study found that regular cannabis users experienced downward social mobility and more financial problems. They had troubles with debt and poor cash flow. Regular long-term users also had more antisocial behaviors at work, such as stealing money or lying to get a job. They also experienced more relationship problems, such as intimate partner violence and controlling abuse.
