Don't forget the monthly PTO meeting is tomorrow, in the Library at 7 p.m.
A huge thank you to our Incredible Westside PTO for all of the love and work that our incredible PTO volunteers put in to the family memorial reception for Officer Paul Crosser. We have an amazing PTO!
We would also like to extend another huge thank you for all of the beautiful new furniture in each of the houses! The updated chairs and coffee tables are beautiful and have created extra space in the waiting rooms of our houses.
It's amazing how much our PTO is always looking out for our students, staff, and faculty.

We are less than a week away from the end of our Spring Fundraiser and still have some ground to cover.
Currently, less than 2% of Westside families have supported Westside Wishes. We need everyone's support. If you've been thinking about giving, do it now! No amount is too small. We just need a lot of small donations!
Together we can make a difference! Together we can make Westside the best! Make wishes come true for some teachers. Donate here, now!

PACK LOSES ONE OF ITS OWN

HISD Police Officer Paul Crosser passed away Thursday, March 31, at the age of 52.
The six-year member of Team HISD is described by HISD Police Chief Robert Mock as an excellent employee who was awarded the Operations Bureau Employee of the Year honor in 2013.
Crosser was most recently assigned to Westside High School, where Principal Peggi Stewart said he took the time to get to know the students and staff on a personal level.
"I've had the honor of working with many HISD officers, but Officer Crosser was one of the best," Stewart said. "He was a wonderful friend and colleague. He was a valued member of our team and our family. He was loved on a personal and professional level. I feel extraordinarily blessed that I got to give him a big hug just a few days ago."
A funeral service was held Saturday, April 2nd. Donations in Officer Crosser's name can be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

BUTTERFLY PROJECT

Students in Mr. Nickerson's World Geography classes learned about the Holocaust and then created Butterflies inspired by the poem, "The Butterfly" written by Pavel Friedman at Theresienstadt concentration camp on June 4, 1942. On Sept. 29th, 194 Mr. Friedman was deported to Auschwitz where he died.
Mr. Nickerson's class visited the Holocaust Museum here in Houston, and read about the children who were in the concentration camps. His students were then asked to create a butterfly in honor of one of the children, illustrating their lives, hopes and dreams. His students then illustrated their own lives, hopes and dreams on the back reflecting on lives from the past.

AP TEST PREADMINISTRATION

It's that time again! AP Preadministration is just around the corner for all Westside AP students! AP Preadministration is where students fill out necessary information on their answer documents in preparation for the exams in May. Doing this process in April saves at least 30 minutes at the beginning of each AP exam! On April 13, all sophomores taking an AP exam will be dismissed from their third period classes at 10:40. They will report to the Commons. Students will have a notification from their assigned AP teacher that will serve as their passes to Preadministration. The whole process will take place during Guidance. All juniors and seniors taking an AP exam will complete the same process on April 14. They will be dismissed from their second period classes at 10:40. Mr. Andrade's AP Human students and Ms. Martinez's AP Spanish Language students will do Preadministration in their classes the week of April 11.

FRENCH SYMPOSIUM

Our talented Westside French students competed over the weekend at the annual Texas French Symposium at Spring Woods High School. They competed in everything from music and art competitions to poetry, prose, sight reading and guided speaking. Many of the students made it to the semi final rounds, and freshman Aamani Pillutlla made it to the finals. The students also competed as a team in the chalk art contest. We are still awaiting the results.
The theme of this year's competition was "Vive la Louisiane" to celebrate Louisiana's rich French heritage. The students all had a blast and are already looking forward to next year's competition!

JANET JUAREZ - EYE ON HOUSTON:
HIGH SCHOOL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY

This is our ongoing series feature on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography exhibit, running through May 1. It features several of our photography students. Make sure you drop by the Museum of Fine Arts and check out all of the amazing work.

Women in my culture have suffered through a lot in their lives; their hands are so beaten up, filled with calluses, burns and gashes. At such a young age they started to work hard, back then is was rare that a girl was allowed to go to school. Instead they had to help with the household chores, a big responsibility was the preparation of the food. They had to make tortillas, it didn't matter if they burned themselves they had to keep going because the men depended on them to have the food ready when they arrived from a hard day at the field crops. When girls got a bit older their responsibilities increased, they had to start helping at the field crops. That was no place for a girl/women because there was a lot of danger in the field. The work had to fast but really cautious to prevent to get bitten by a snake or a scorpion. A bite from them was deadly, many died from it due to a lacking of a medical center that could help them. In my culture women are not equally respected like men but one thing for sure the biggest insult for a woman is to have a child of their own to rebel against them.

WESTSIDE WELLNESS: PROTEIN PANCAKES

Pancakes have long been a breakfast favorite, but they leave most of us feeling ready for a nap. Instead of starting your day with such a heavy meal, treat yourself to a healthier, more energizing option: protein pancakes! There are plenty of pricey protein powders on the market, but this recipe actually only requires two ingredients. Try it out and see if you feel fuller and more focused throughout the day!
- Mash one ripe banana with a fork and mix it with one cracked egg (add more egg whites if desired) until it is as smooth as possible.
- Grease a griddle or frying pan with a little bit of coconut oil or butter.
- Heat the pan and pour your mixture into pancakes, flipping so that both sides are brown.
- Remove from heat and eat!
Super easy and cheap! Add in oats, nut butter, blueberries, vanilla extract, cinnamon, or canned pumpkin for different textures and flavors. Drizzle a little honey over the top if you are craving syrup!

CHOICES CORNER: MARIJUANA MYTHS & FACTS

Studies show that only 7.5% of teens from ages 12-17 have used cannabis, also known as marijuana, in the past month. So, when you hear students say, "Everyone is doing it!" it is simply NOT true. Many student believe that because marijuana is natural it is not harmful. However, tobacco is a natural plant. Pain medications come from natural plants. Despite their natural origins, these and other drugs can cause serious health problems including addiction.
Did you know cannabis abuse during adolescence decrease a student's ability to clearly weigh short-term and long-term consequences? This also includes being able to judge what may happen in any given event. How? When marijuana is smoked it goes through the blood stream and right to the brain arresting the development of adult frontal lobe growth. This month the Choices Corner will cover the effects marijuana on our brain including facts on marijuana and synthetic marijuana.
Keep a look out for all the upcoming E-News articles! Remember, if you or someone you know is struggling with a high-risk behavior, contact me, Ebony Lumpkin, Westside Choices Counselor, at elumpkin@councilonrecovery.org.
