RUTH LOPEZ - EYE ON HOUSTON:
HIGH SCHOOL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
This is our ongoing series feature on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography exhibit, running through May 1. It features several of our photography students. Make sure you drop by the Museum of Fine Arts and check out all of the amazing work.
As Houstonians, we have unstable weather, regularly. Some days we wake up to heavy rainfall, and as the day progresses, it turns out to be a bright sunny day. Houston is a very unpredictable place to live in, but that's the adventurous part of it. Living here is going along for a ride because many unexpected things happen. Houston may have those days with awful weather, but we can find the beauty within those days. This brings out a unique glamour to Houston because despite the erratic weather, we always have something to look forward to. No matter the weather, Houston always has a beautiful scenery to be captured.
WESTSIDE WELLNESS: HEALTHY WEIGHT GAIN
The health and wellness world places a focus on improving fitness and losing weight. While most people can benefit from improved strength, it is important to remember that many people do not need to lose weight. Finding a balanced or "natural" weight is important to maintaining overall health. Each person has an individualized set of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and metabolism. Naturally thin people are often called "lucky", but it can be just as hard to gain weight as to lose it. It is important to seek professional help if you are having trouble gaining weight for an extended period of time.

Here are a few pointers for gaining weight in a balanced and healthy way:
  • Focus on quality over quantity. You may be nutrient deficient, and scarfing down junk food will not fix the root issue.
  • Don't fear fats! Avocado, hummus, nut butter, and olive and coconut oils are all easy additions to meals any time of day.
  • Power up with protein, choosing between beef, chicken, fish, eggs, beans, or Greek yogurt for each meal.
  • Increase your intake of whole grains such as brown rice, oatmeal, and whole wheat bread.
  • DO NOT skip meals! Staying consistent with your eating schedule is key to reaching a healthy weight.
  • Rest and relax; Stressing over your weight will work against you, so try to take it easy!
CHOICES CORNER:
PEER PRESSURE-TO DRINK OR NOT TO DRINK
Even "good kids" make mistakes and give into peer pressure. All adolescents have developing brains, no matter how high their IQ is or how they were raised. Between the ages of 11-25, a teenager's ability for psychosocial maturity is still developing. Parents often say, "Oh, you know better than that!" or "You were not raised like that!"

Scientifically speaking, they do know right from wrong but when teens undergo peer pressure often times how they were raised or taught goes out the window! Research tells us that teenagers base their decision making on consequences, not morals. This "Will I get in trouble or not?" decision making occurs well into their young adult lives.

Although you may state that you do not allow alcohol inside or outside of the home, teenagers must know their consequences BEFORE peer pressure happens as it relates to alcohol. When teens are faced with thoughts like, "Should I drink or should I not drink?" their final decision will be based upon whether they are willing to take the consequence for it. If your child chooses not to drink based to avoid the consequence...Great! If not, that means the consequence is not BIG enough.

If you need more help and ideas about putting consequences in place, as well as deciding what is big enough, please email me, Ebony Lumpkin, Westside Choices Counselor, at elumpkin@councilonrecovery.org.
