WESTSIDE COMMUNITY IN MOURNING

Our beloved Ms. Tiwana Anderson passed away recently and has left so many hearts saddened. Ms. Anderson-Anele worked with our East 2 Career and Technology Education teachers. She was one of the core Linked Learning leaders and taught Web Technology and Animation.
Mrs. Anderson-Anele has been such a ray of sunshine on our campus and an inspiration for our students for living a life full of love and respect for everyone. She will be so missed by our Wolf family. Here is the link for all Westside students and staff members to post pictures and notes in remembrance of Mrs. Anderson-Anaele.

WESTSIDE WISHES

We are less than two weeks away from the end of our Spring Fundraiser and still have some ground to cover.
Currently, less than 2% of Westside families have supported Westside Wishes. We need everyone's support. If you've been thinking about giving, do it now! No amount is too small. We just need a lot of small donations!
Together we can make a difference! Together we can make Westside the best! Make wishes come true for some teachers. Donate here, now!

ANTONIO OLIVARES - EYE ON HOUSTON:
HIGH SCHOOL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY

This is our ongoing series feature on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography exhibit, running through May 1. It features several of our photography students. Make sure you drop by the Museum of Fine Arts and check out all of the amazing work.

Welcome to Houston, incorporated on June 5th, 1837, now 178 years later we've become the 4th biggest city in the United States. This city has come a long way over the years and still has plenty of room to grow. We are home of the widest freeway in the world, but we are also home to the most dangerous roads. But not the most dangerous people, we are a very open minded, accepting people. The diversity of the City is incredible, on one street you can go from Cajun, to Asian, to Hispanic, to BBQ food. We have it all, we also have all the weather, we have hot summers, and cold winters. It can rain on one side of the street but not the other. This defines us as Houstonians, adaptable, able to grow and accept the challenges life brings us.
Houston is a growing city, and it's only getting bigger and bigger. So it's not rare to see construction all around town, whether you're downtown, or out in the suburbs of west Houston. You can always find construction somewhere, it defines us as a process. Highway 6 used to be a 2 lane road, now it's a 6 line Highway. It just shows that Houston is evolving into the super city it's destined to become.

CHOICES CORNER: DRINKING & DRIVING

Did you know the risks of driving under the influence (DUI) rapidly increases during adolescence. The DUI rate doubles between the ages of 16-19 years of age (Delcher, 2012). This information is definitely something to consider while raising your teenager! Fortunately, in the 2015 Westside Survey, our students reported a decrease in drinking and driving. This means the culture at Westside is changing for the better and our students are making better choices! If you are a parent that incorporates strict consequences for underage drinking and taking away your teen's car if they ever drink and drive in your family code, we applaud your parenting skills!
Remember, you may have a family code that prohibits your teen from engaging in drinking and driving, BUT your teen's friend may not! As a parent, it is imperative that these types of statistics and facts do not go unaddressed. You may ask, "What could I do in the event my child's friend's family does not have a family code or rules about underage drinking?"
The right thing to do is ASK. It may feel awkward at first or you may think that's not my job to tell other parents what to do. The only thing you have to do is share the rules pertaining your teen to their friend's parent. Asking straightforward questions like, "Do you all have a family code or rules about alcohol? These are ours. We do not allow our teen to drink and definitely no drinking and driving". Whether or not the parent(s) receive the idea of a family code, you have at least done your due diligence as a parent! Remember, your job as a parent is to protect your teen's brain from all substances with a clear family code that states what is expected and what the consequences will be if those expectations are not met.
If you need more assistance or have any questions about alcohol awareness please email me, Ebony Lumpkin, Westside Choices Counselor at elumpkin@councilonrecovery.org.
