WESTSIDE WISHES

Westside Wolfpack Families - Let's pull together! These awesome teachers work with your kids everyday... they are committed to doing the best job possible.  But sometimes they need additional supplies to enhance their teaching experience.

Will you please consider a gift to the 2016 Westside Wishes Go Fund Me account?  All of our contributions will be used to purchase items that these teachers have told the PTO will make a difference to our kids in the classroom!  There are almost 3,000 families at Westside... together we can make a difference.  Please share this link with grandparents, work colleagues and other WHS parents who are not members of the PTO.  If you're up at school, we have a new donation dropbox at the welcome desk as you enter - if that's easier for you.  The students can support their favorite teachers by dropping in a dollar or two, as well.  We're all in this together! Here's a link to the Go Fund Me page: https://www.gofundme.com/westsidewishes2016.  Let's do this!

Leslie Devillier
WHS PTO President

For a complete list of wishes, click here. So far we've raised over $3400 from only 39 families and individuals.  Think what we could do if everyone donated $50! Please donate now and help us to make Westside High School the best!

This sport isn't cheap, so Nick has some major sponsorships.  His sponsors this year are are Lone Star Track Days Racing, Dunlop Tires, Vesrah, BD Racing, Vortex, GPR Stabilizers, Texas Tornado Boot Camp, Motonation/Sidi Boots, Single Source, Moto-D, Comet Racing Leathers, M4 exhaust, Venhill brake lines, Redline Graphics and James Compton Race Services.

Pretty serious stuff for a serious racer. Watch out for more big things from this Wolf!

Westside's WEGA Team, consisting of 8 students won the first annual High School Offshore and Technology Stars Challenge. The event was hosted by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and the Ocean Energy Safety Institure (OESI) at the University of Houston.

Our Wolves collaborated with each other to design and build an energy harvesting circuit.  The circuit  enabled them to fly through a course on the University of Houstons's TDECU Stadium football field. Thomas Nassab was the pilot who successfully piloted the helicopter simulating travel to and from an offshore oil platform  They defeated 14 other teams! BEATA PURVINA - EYE ON HOUSTON:
HIGH SCHOOL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
This is our ongoing series feature on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography exhibit, running from January 12 through May 1. It features several of our photography students. Make sure you drop by the Museum of Fine Arts and check out all of the amazing work.
When one hears the name "Mexican Kitchen," more often than not, a large warm comfortable restaurant with relatively cheap, big, greasy dishes, and plastic cups with napkin-wrapped silverware come to mind. Houston culture, being as diverse as it is, has contradictory aspects to itself, including breaking its own stereotypes. This "Mexican Kitchen" looks more luxurious than some authentically white "Steak Houses."
WESTSIDE WELLNESS: SAFE SUN ON SPRING BREAK
Whether you are heading to the beach or staying close to home for Spring Break, it is likely that you will get some time in the sun. As the temperatures rise and the sun begins to stay out longer each day, we have the opportunity to soak up some Vitamin D, which strengthens our bones and immune systems and balances our hormones and brain function. Our society has become very concerned with melanoma and sun damage, two very important issues, but some people have over applied sunscreen and stopped spending time outside, resulting in a Vitamin D deficiency. We must strike a balance by getting enough safe sun!
  • 10-15 minutes spent midday in the sun will give you essential Vitamin D, but longer activities are best done during off-peak hours, before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.
  • During peak hours, reapply SPF 30 sunscreen every 1-2 hours, depending on how easily you burn.
  • Wear hats and lightweight clothing that will cover the majority of your body. Physical barriers will not wear off like sunscreen!
  • Hydrate with water, unsweetened juices, or coconut water, and eat nuts and berries, which contain immune-boosting antioxidants.
CHOICES CORNER: ALCOHOL AWARENESS
April is Alcohol Awareness month and so is this month's Choices topic! This is a timely topic for parents who want to prevent risky behavior on their teen's spring break? Spring Break for many teens translates into having fun, sleeping late and hanging with friends.

Parents should remember that their teen's executive functioning skills of good decision making, judgment and impulse control may be limited due to their developing teen brain. The last thing teens want to do is use their pre-frontal cortex over Spring Break!

Remember, a sixteen year old only has about 50% of their adult brain developed. The pre-frontal cortex is not fully developed until the age of 24 or 25. So, you have scientific justification to be your teen's frontal lobe until theirs fully develops! Your best prevention tool is to have a "Family Code of Ethics."

In your family code, we encourage to use the following language: "In this family, we don't allow drinking until the age of 21" or "In this family, we do not use alcohol until the age of 21 or promote underage drinking." When your teen hears you repeat these phrases every couple of months or so, they will you're your expectations. They may still chose to go against your family code however unless the consequences for breaking it are clear. We recommend 2-4 weeks of no privileges if your teen engages in underage drinking. There is still time left to create your family code today or at least before March 14!

If you need assistance with writing your family code of ethics or if you know someone who needs us, please email Ebony Lumpkin, Westside Choices Counselor.
We value your feedback!
