SHADES OF BLUE
Shades of Blue 2016 was a huge success! This is our first time having Outback Steakhouse cater dinner, and it proved to be a big selling point. We had over 200 RSVPs for meal tickets, and even sold the extra dinners we ordered "just in case."

The WHS Band and Percussion students enjoyed preparing for this event. We enjoyed having the West Briar MS Jazz Band come and perform.

Several parents approached Mr. Gonzales afterwards with lots of very kind compliments, and basically just saying how impressed they were by the all the student performances.

Once the drapes were put up, the tables decorated, and the lights dimmed, it was like a piano lounge atmosphere. It really looked like a completely different place!

A huge shout-out goes to the Westside Art Department for setting up their display; it really classed up the place!
SATURDAY TUTORIALS

Tutorials are available in all levels of math, biology, chemistry, and physics on Saturdays. English and Social Studies are on some weekends, so check with your teacher.

WESTSIDE CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

During the month of February, Westside's Houses were asked to decorate their entrances in honor of Black History Month. This year's contest was an incredible showcase of student talent, as you can see by the photos of hand painted signs and murals from our students.  It was a difficult decision but South 2 is the new winner! East 2 is Honorable Mention. Thanks to all of the houses, house secretaries, teachers, students, and deans who helped make this years celebration a huge success!

 SOPHOMORE SAILOR KEEPS GAINING SPEED

Sophomore Charlotte Rose competed in the International Laser Midwinters East Regatta in Clearwater, Florida.

Charlotte put on an awesome display of sailing and was laying 3rd going into the final race on Sunday. Charlotte ended 8th overall out of 100 boats (male and female) and as top US woman. The two women above her are Canadian Olympic sailors.

As a result of her efforts in Clearwater, Miami Worlds (62nd) and Fort Lauderdale (9th), Charlotte has been invited to represent Team USA in the Mexico Laser Women Worlds from April 8-22, and Laser Youth Worlds in Ireland from July 23-30. A fantastic achievement and honor to represent her Country.
THE CITY IS OUR CLASSROOM

Mrs. Klein's Environmental Science Classes went to the Port of Houston and the University of Houston-Downtown.  It began with water sample testing during a boat tour along the ship channel. Before pushing off, the students collected a water sample and then tested it while they were on the boat tour.

Next, it was a stop at the University of Houston-Downtown to hear about the many programs they offer. The students also were able to hear the history of the original building. After that, it was across the bayou to look at Allen's Landing and where Houston began with its rich history, centered around our port. The day culminated with one more water sample for quality testing. This real world classroom experience is thanks to Mrs. Klein and Mr. Spence.

EMILY RAFERTY - EYE ON HOUSTON:
HIGH SCHOOL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
This is our ongoing series feature on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography exhibit, running from January 12 through May 1. It features several of our photography students. Make sure you drop by the Museum of Fine Arts and check out all of the amazing work.
This photo shows the way many locals in Houston get their food on a weekly basis. This Farmers Market is in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood which is seen in this picture. Houston has a large Hispanic culture and this photo shows some insight to their normal weekly routine of getting food for their families for the week on a Saturday morning.
WESTSIDE WELLNESS: SPRING ALLERGIES
It looks like spring allergies are coming early this year, leaving many of us feeling fatigued and under the weather. Allergy tests from doctors can be very helpful in identifying exactly what your triggers are. While more severe allergy sufferers may need various types of antihistamines, here are a few other ways to guard against a major reaction:
  1. Limit pollen exposure by wearing a hat or sunglasses when outside, and remove shoes and change clothes worn outdoors upon coming home.
  2. Drink green tea and make foods spicier with cayenne or jalapeņos to boost the immune system and reduce nasal congestion.
  3. Load up on Vitamin C, which acts as a natural and gentle antihistamine.
  4. Use a nasal rinse to keep sinuses clean and clear. A neti pot can be used for saline nasal irrigation and reduces inflammation and stuffiness.
  5. Try homeopathic allergy drops that give small doses of local allergens to improve the body's immune response- similar to how a flu shot works. (Allergena Texas Trees is a great brand.)
  6. Maintain the wellness trifecta of healthy diet, exercise, and quality sleep to lower your stress levels, making you less likely to have an allergic reaction.
