ANNELEISE SEBESTA - EYE ON HOUSTON:
HIGH SCHOOL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
This is our ongoing series feature on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography exhibit, running from January 12 through May 1. It features several of our photography students. Make sure you drop by the Museum of Fine Arts and check out all of the amazing work.

Houston is one of the largest cities in America. We are lauded for our industrious petroleum market and our booming economy, but many forget that there is a large population of homeless people in Houston. We are numb to the pain and hardship our fellow Houstonians suffer through; we pass 6 people pleading for change and we don't give them a second glance. The houseless population in Houston needs to be heard.
DEBATE COMPETES INTERNATIONALLY;
BEGINS CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS
At the Old Parkland Debates World Schools Invitational in Dallas, Team Westside tied for first in our division, which included the top team from Miami, New York, Mexico, Argentina, and Dallas.

The team was tied on record and overall number of ballots, so speaker points were used to break the tie and determine which team would debate in the finals. The team fell short on speaker points, thus missing out on representing the division in the final debate.

Our team consisted of 3 Westside Students (Syed Raza, Jacia Ali, and Nicholas Abraham), plus Tesfamichael Negussue from Challenge Early College HS, and Elissa Palmer from Houston Academy of International Studies.

That competition helped prepare our debaters for the Houston Urban Debate League City Championships. On Saturday, we competed in the prelimary rounds, and had a fantastic showing. Two of our three CX teams, both of our World Schools teams, 3 of our 5 PF teams, and all three of our LD debaters will all advance to the elimination rounds next weekend, February 20, at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Houston.

The names of advancing students are: Aditya Pethe, Dhanush Nadella, Tyana Dixon, Masha Pobedinsky, Syed Raza, Nicholas Abraham, Jacia Ali, JaDayshia Garrett, Leilani Lattimore, Sydney Willett, Heather Lucas, Xander Ly, Sarah Hudson, Arvin Farangi, CJ Santibanez, Sean Le, Timothy Gao, Caroline Salguero, Ahmad Sule, Andrew Moore, and Dean Vicerra.

A huge Wolf Congratulations goes to our debate coach, Richard Whitrock, for being awarded "Coach of the Year" at the HUDL event on Saturday.
FUTURES ACADEMY GETS UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

CHOICES CORNER: DATING VIOLENCE
This month's topic is going to be on dating violence, dating, sex, and love.  Nine percent of high school students report being hit, slapped, or physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend in the past year (Oudekerk, 2014).

Many adolescents begin romantic relationships in high school. I know parents, this isn't the most exciting news to discuss but getting creative in how we inform our teens about dating violence is needed.
Interpersonal relationships take precedence over almost any other activity or engagement. Often times, teens don't feel like they can share that information with adults because they fear many things like the consequences and reactions of their partner hitting them.

"But I never see it or hear about it at Westside." Five percent of those students involved in dating violence at Westside, has experienced being raped by an acquaintance and or a friend. These reportings were taken from the Choices survey that is given every year.

Westside, we must create a new culture when it comes to dating violence. Teens look towards each other for most of their advice; the influence of peers contribute greatly to their relationships especially friendships and romantic relationships. As a result, we want to make sure we all know how to take part in a healthy relationship and to not be apart of dating violence. The primary goal is to decrease unhealthy dating and increase healthy dating.
