COME SUPPORT OUR LADY WOLVES

The Lady Wolves begin their run for a State Championship this Tuesday night against Tompkins High School. Tip off is at 7 p.m., at Cinco Ranch High School.
BRANDON RAMOS - EYE ON HOUSTON:
HIGH SCHOOL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
This is our ongoing series feature on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography exhibit, running from January 12 through May 1. It features several of our photography students. Make sure you drop by the Museum of Fine Arts and check out all of the amazing work.

Hispanics are the leading demographic in Houston, so the Hispanic culture ties with daily life of many Houstonians. The anonymity of the sting players lends to the idea that there isn't a face to a culture but emotions through our traditions. Although you don't see the faces of each player you can see that the age of each as well as their instruments, the implication that they have been playing for many years.
JAPANESE LANGUAGE STUDENTS COMPETE
Westside participated in the Regional Japanese Speech Contest this past Saturday at St. Thomas University. Ms. Sheridan had seven students participating this year from Westside; four Japanese I students in poetry, one Japanese II in Haiku, one Japanese III in free speech with text, and one Japanese IV student in Aurora free speech.

Ms. Sheridan was very proud of each student for their hard work in memorizing to recite the Japanese poem, creating Haiku and Essay in Japanese, and reciting them.

Gustavo Riviera was advanced to the final 5 from 25 total participants and won the 3rd place in the Poetry division. Aisha Aslam also won the 3rd place in Aurora free speech. Gustavo and Aisha will be alternates to the State competition in their divisions. Daniel Hingco also was advanced to the final and won the 2nd place. He will be competing in the State in March.

WRESTLERS ADVANCE TO STATE
Ty'Rae Carter and Myles Hampton earned 2nd place at Regionals, which means they will be returning to State, where they both placed 5th, last year.

This will be Ty'Rae's second trip to State and Myles' third consecutive year being a State qualifier.  Also placing at Regionals, was freshman Daniel Hernandez-Mendoza who placed 6th (pictured below.)
CAREER & EDUCATION HISPANIC FORUM

More than 35 Westside Wolves attended this Career and Education Hispanic Forum at the George R. Brown Convention Center this past Saturday.

They were so excited because they got a lot of answers to their college/career questions.

Ms. Arias said it was such a blessing to have the opportunity to be with all of them, enjoying their youthful energy.  She had fun with them, and greatly appreciated the parents who chaperoned.
SHADES OF BLUE RETURNS

Shades of Blue 2016 is shaping up to be quite an experience! This year, Outback Steakhouse will be catering dinner, so for the low price of $10, you can get a meal and a drink, as well as a wonderful evening of musical performances!
  • If you RSVP, please commit! - We need to provide Outback with a 'hard' number well in advance of the actual night, so please attend if you decide to RSVP!
  • "Can I buy tickets at the door?" - Yes! But, doing so does not guarantee you a meal because of the reason stated above.
  • The Outback Experience - For $10, you will receive an entree with 2 sides, a roll, and a beverage, plus dessert! This is a great value deal!
  • "Can I reserve an entire table?" - We are not offering pre-sale table tickets. What you can do is coordinate with your group and plan on claiming a table once doors open. Each table seats 8 people, so if you have a small group, try to find another small group with whom to share a table.
  • "Can I purchase multiple tickets?" - Yes! Simply select the number of tickets from the options below, and list all members of your party in the Comments area in the last cell of the row.
NEW PHONE SYSTEM WILL CHANGE EXTENSIONS
On February 16, Westside will be getting a new phone system.

Beginning at 8 a.m., Tuesday, HISD will have a team on campus to  go into each room and install our VoIP phones.  (VoIP [Voice Over Internet Protocol] is a methodology for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol  networks.)

The main line will stay the same but all of the deans, house secretaries, registrar, attendance, etc. will have a new direct dial number.  Not all of the folks who have direct dial now will be getting direct dial with the new system.

The Houston Bar Association is conducting Essay and Photography contests in connection with Law Day, an annual event celebrating democracy and citizenship in the United States.

DIGITAL LEARNING DAY

Juniors Rachel Hill and Sofia Hernandez and their English III teacher, Ms. Alleyne, represented Westside at the Digital Learning Day Expo held at Hattie Mae White.

What is Digital Learning Day? Digital learning is any instructional practice that effectively uses technology to strengthen a student's learning experience.  It's not just about the technology used, it's about innovative teaching and opportunities for students to work creatively and collaboratively.  Digital Learning Day is celebrated nation-wide to showcase schools' best practices and promote a new educational venue for students that is fun and interactive.

What is the Digital Learning Day Expo? Each HISD high school has selected 2-4 students to showcase their digital learning projects prior to the February school board meeting. In honor of Digital Learning Month, the goal of the expo is to showcase how students learn digitally to HISD board members, Hattie Mae White employees, community partners, and other district teachers. Student representatives presented student-created documentaries, digital presentations (made with tools like Prezi), websites, blogs, e-books, or games.

Ms. Alleyne has done such a great job using tech to enhance lessons and this allows students to drive their learning. Rachel & Sofia's projects are evidence of that!

During the expo, Rachel and Sofia shared:
  • a Weebly website they made about The Great Gatsby
  • 6 twitter accounts they made to represent the interactions of 6 Gatsby characters
  • their daily Popplet vocab exercises
  • a Prezi from their muckraking research project that tackled a pressing school/community issue
  • a Weebly website created by Mrs. Klein's class that shows all the species in our Wolf Prairie
Ms. Alleyne shared a variety of projects created by her various students, including:
  • Weebly and Wix websites analyzing The Great Gatsby
  • Prezis from a research project that tied together "Fences" and another one of August Wilson's projects that depicts life for African Americans during each decade of the 1900's.
YEAR OF THE MONKEY: CHINESE NEW YEAR
Students in Bo Sun's Chinese classes celebrated the Chinese New Year, last week. It was a great experience. The students had so much fun making and eating dumplings! The room was transformed into a festive party by decorations the students provided! The students impressed guests by explaining the event  and by helping to keep things running smoothly.
WESTSIDE WELLNESS: CALCIUM & VITAMIN D
A surprising number of people have vitamin deficiencies, usually due to poor or restricted diets. While supplements can come in handy, the best way to obtain nutrients is directly through our food. Let's take a look at two bone-building nutrients that people are commonly deficient in, Calcium and Vitamin D, to better understand why they are essential and what foods to find them in.

Calcium is a known necessity for strengthening bones and teeth, but it also helps to regulate blood pressure, nerve cell transmission, and digestive enzymes. Studies also show that calcium deficiencies can lead to diabetes and colon cancer. Great sources of calcium include dairy, tofu, oranges, almonds, and green vegetables.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, as well as promoting cell growth and helping to prevent cardiovascular disease and respiratory infections. Fish such as salmon, sardines, and tuna naturally contain Vitamin D, and many cereals and juices are fortified with it. You can also step outside for a few minutes each day and absorb it from the sun!
CHOICES CORNER: HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS
Talking about sex with parents can be a daunting thing to experience. Feelings of embarrassment and worrying about how your parents or caretakers may react can be a scary feeling. Instead of this article telling you about sex, here are a few things to consider on why you should be open in having a conversation with your parents and or caretakers:
  • Your parents have their full frontal lobe; which scientifically means that they can discuss this topic with their executive functions like decision making and judgment
  • It may be hard to believe, but they, too, were teens at one point
  • Allows you to get clear on family morals and beliefs
  • Gives refusal skills
  • It's going to come up (maybe), so you might as well
The whole idea is to have the sex talk with your parents, or approved adults like a counselor, to discuss this topic with accurate information. Sex education is a way to increase our personal safety and to increase our protective factors, especially from  unforeseen possible risks.

Stay posted for the upcoming articles. Please contact me at elumpkin@councilonrecovery.org for more information on this topic or come by Room N144.
