COMMUNITY FORUM RECAP
| |
On Monday, January 25, Westside's Principal Peggi Stewart hosted a Westside Community Forum to discuss major campus initiatives such as PowerUp, Guidance, Advanced Academics, and School Safety Improvements. Instruction is our core focus, yet our greatest responsibility is to ensure campus safety and security.
Last April, faculty representatives initiated the school uniforms discussion through the SDMC process (The SDMC - Shared Decision Making Committee is comprised of teachers, support staff, administrators, community business members, and parents who represent their respective groups). The topic of uniforms has also been discussed at multiple PTO meetings. Finally, WHS faculty and staff were surveyed in November 2015, and 85% agreed that a school uniform would improve campus safety from the standpoint of being able to identify unauthorized visitors. The difficult question discussed in multiple SDMC meetings was: Will the safety benefits of school uniforms outweigh some concerns from our community? Taking into consideration previous community deliberations and recent events around the country, the focus on campus safety was elevated as the priority. Therefore, the SDMC voted to adopt student uniforms in 2016-2017.
This information is being shared six months in advance, so that students and parents can provide input on the uniform design. This will also allow sufficient time for all students to acquire uniforms by the start of the school year.
SDMC-developed parameters for the design of the student uniform are as follows:
- Westside branding
- Affordability
- Easily accessible
- Easily identifiable
The SDMC and Ms. Stewart welcome and appreciate your suggestions, feedback and/or comments. Opportunities for your input are provided through these forums:
- Comments posted electronically: Uniform Comment Form
- PTO Meeting- Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Mini-Theatre
- Parent Meeting- Saturday, Feb. 6, at 9 a.m.-10 a.m. in the Mini-Theatre
