PETRO CHALLENGE PUTS STUDENTS IN OIL BIZ

The Petro Challenge was a 2 day event sponsored by Schlumberger, NEXT Energy, and Occidental, and organized by IPAA/PESA. Fifty students from Westside competed with students from Milby, YWCPA, and Southwest High School in Ft. Worth, TX.
They used OilSim software to simulate evaluating offshore blocks of land for potential oil deposits using a variety of surveys and seismic data. Teams then bid for blocks, drilled exploratory wells, negotiated investments with other teams, and completed community service activities to improve their companies' economic and social value.
Teams had mixed membership, with all teams having at least one Westside student. The photo has the winners from Westside on the three top teams - Oman Noon, Melanie Guerrero, and Will Collier.

WESTSIDE WELLNESS: PROBIOTICS

In the past few years, probiotics have become very popular for solving digestive issues. Probiotics are advertised by supplement and yogurt companies, and people know they are "good for you", but it is not always clear exactly how we can benefit from them. Here are five important ways that probiotics can give your body a boost! - Probiotics help to maintain good bacteria in our digestive tracts, soothing issues such as bloating and irritable bowel syndrome.
- Healthy bacteria can help to stimulate our immune response, even reducing allergies.
- Probiotic supplements can aid in weight loss, decreasing abdominal fat.
- Good bacteria in the gut can reduce insulin resistance and glucose sensitivity, potentially preventing hypertension and onset diabetes.
- Taking probiotics alongside antibiotics is VERY important in order to maintain balance in your digestive system.
Probiotics can be delivered in the form of supplements or through eating the following foods: -Probiotics or Kefir -Sauerkraut -Pickles -Miso -Kombucha tea (As always, you may need to consult a physician before starting a new diet or supplement plan.)

CHOICES CORNER:
VIDEO GAME & INTERNET ADDICTION

Video games and Internet use can be addicting?! Absolutely, although it is not a clinical diagnosis yet, addictive-like behaviors with the computer, video games, and Internet are real. Compulsive gaming can lead to dependence, irritability, or depression. If one already has symptoms of anxiety or depression, a gaming addiction only makes it worst, and those that stop addictive gaming behavior see their symptoms of depression and anxiety decrease; studies show that it is a direct correlation as to what influence gaming has on mental health.
We get it, the Internet on our computers and especially on our phones are ways to cope, communicate, get information, and of course, entertain us.
There are as many pros to Internet use as there are cons. Think about it, the Internet helps us retain knowledge, connect with long lost family members, stay in touch with loved ones, share memories, find scholarships, jobs, and the list goes on. Being able to monitor how much Internet we use (for our entertainment) on a daily basis is key in brain development. Entertainment includes instagram, phone games, cyber-bullying, blogs, Snapchat, Kik, Facebook, Twitter, pornography, sport updates, fashion sites and other similar websites. Students, it's not about not using internet at all, it is learning new healthy innovative ways to cope, develop relationships and stay safe by limiting Internet use. Take about 5 minutes to look at the questions below to self-reflect. Self Reflection - How often do you stay online or game more than you intend to?
- How long can you go without gaming or the Internet?
- When is the last time you have hung with your friends or family without technology?
- What would it be like to decrease your gaming time or Internet use?
- How would life be if you only used up to an hour a day with on the Internet or gaming? (This does not include school-related assignments)
Fun Fact Did you know if you expose your brain to the Internet or gaming for 5 hours in one sitting that it can make structural brain changes? So, parents, this gives you a good guideline for how much screen time your child should have in one day.
As always, if you have questions and want more ways and ideas to discuss this matter with your teen, please contact me at elumpkin@councilonrecovery.org or by calling 281-920-8000 ext. 6144.
