GIRLS SOCCER TEAM OFF TO GREAT START

The girls varsity soccer team is off to a great start for the 2015-16 season. The Lady Wolves soccer team is currently 6-2 on the season and has outscored the opposition, 27 goals for to 3 goals against.
Led by senior team captains and returning 1st team All-District selections, Leila Al-Haj (5 goals; 5 assists), Audrey Medrano (5 goals; 1 assist) and Valeria Vasquez (4 goals; 4 assists), our varsity girls soccer team is looking to continue where they left off last year, with a record of 15 wins, 5 losses, and 2 ties.
Senior goalkeeper Morgan Koch has already recorded 4.5 shutouts this year. Morgan broke the school record last season with 8.5 shutouts and was selected to the 2nd team All-District.
The defense has recorded 5 shutouts in 8 games so far this year. Leading our defense this season include junior and 2015 2nd team All-District, Adriana Seng along with sophomore Mishauri Nolan (2015 2nd team All-District), Juniors Lizzulli Carpinteyro, Estefania Arrivillaga ( 2015 3rd team All-District selection), Joanna Rodriguez and freshman Miranda Ortiz. Adriana Seng has 1 goal and leads the team in assists (5) as a defender. Sophomore defender Randa Al-Haj has been inactive due to injury.
Our midfield line is held together by the outstanding play of 2015 2nd team All-District selection Sinai Zelaya (4 assists), 2015 3rd team All-District selection Alexandra Mendez (1 goal; 3 assists), Freshmen Faith Farmer (1 goal; 3 assists) and Juliana Santacruz (2 goals; 2 assists). Forward and freshman Nathalie Gomez leads the team in scoring with 9 goals. The girls varsity soccer team made it to the semi-final round in the Waller Classic Invitational Varsity Tournament. Congrats to our girls varsity soccer team.

FIGHTING OFF THE ZOMBIE APOCOLYPSE

Last semester, Mr. Nickerson's classes created special projects in World Geography. The students spent several months creating a settlement that could survive a zombie attack.
First, they wrote a paper in APA format describing their settlement and the migration process. Next, they created a mental map of their settlement. Over the break the students made their vision of their settlement come alive and created models of them.

FUTURES ACADEMY EXPLORES TIRR

The Futures Academy visited TIRR (The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research) with Memorial Hermann. They met with the office of education and with several RNs regarding the programs available. During their tour, they were able to see the hospital in action and witness many of the patients completing their therapies.

CHOICES CORNER:
PORNOGRAPHY-SEX ADDICTION:
DEFINITION & EFFECTS

The largest consumer group for pornography is individuals between the ages of 12 and 17. Surprised? The Internet grants us access to almost anything we want to know, including sexual images and videos at any time. However, engagement in pornography creates unhealthy and unrealistic expectations for our sexuality as we move into adulthood. As humans, we naturally develop relationships, but if we expose ourselves to sexual media, especially at a young age it can crate unhealthy behaviors such as promiscuity, psychological effects, change in brain chemistry, increase legal risk for sex offending, personal problems, and many other consequences. If we continue to increase and flood our dopamine levels with risqué instant gratification, there will consequences and they will be different for each person. What are the signs of porn addiction? Excessive time on the Internet, drop in grades, mood swings, and evidence of porn, just to name a few. Porn addiction and sex addiction are different. Sex addiction consists of compulsive sexual behavior, also known as hypersexuality; when one is completely obsessed with sexual behaviors, thoughts or feeling to the extent that the behavior interferes with school, school related activities, health, and relationships. Porn addiction is sexual activity with concurrent use of pornographic material, despite negative consequences to one's physical, mental, or social well-being.
These two types of addictions have to be taken seriously. If your child does not have these particular concerns, you now have additional information to add to your repertoire of being an awesome and knowledgeable parent.
As always, if you have questions and want more ways and ideas to discuss this matter with your teen, please contact me at elumpkin@councilonrecovery.org or by calling 281-920-8000 ext. 6144.
