COMMUNITY FORUM INVITATION
FROM PRINCIPAL STEWART

Happy New Year Westside Students and Families! I hope your families enjoyed a restful and fulfilling holiday season.
Our first week of 2016 has been very productive for both students and faculty! My promise to the Westside community has been to provide transparency on Westside's instructional programming and campus initiatives.
We will be hosting a Westside Community Forum on Monday, January 25, 2016, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., in our auditorium. Highlights will educate our stakeholders on the progress of our most recent initiatives (such as NMSI, dual credit, Guidance, Power Up, etc) as well as our plans to enhance campus safety and enhancements to campus security, including changes in dress code for the 2016-17 school year.
We look forward to your presence and involvement!
Sincerely,
Peggi Stewart

Westside swimmers stepped up their performances and finished strong and proudly ahead of several hundred swimmers. Westside boys finished in 4th place overall, while the girls finished in 1st and are the 2016 Champions!

WESTSIDE WELLNESS: WEIGHT LOSS GOALS
| |

January is the month when most weight loss goals are set, but it can be overwhelming to look at the hurdles required before reaching that ultimate goal for the year.
While some people are blessed with a high metabolism, others have to combat genetics or long-lasting harmful habits. Hard work is a key component of weight loss, but metabolism boosters can serve as shortcuts to increasing momentum in your routine! See how one or more of these tips can rev up the process for you! - EAT! It's a common misconception that starvation and deprivation truly assist in weight loss. To achieve long-lasting results, you will need fuel from food. Eating more frequently actually speeds up your metabolism and your capacity to burn fat. Make sure you get enough protein to create sustained energy and build lean muscle; reach for foods rich in potassium, iron, and fiber to stay full longer and recover faster. Adding extra spices to meals also curbs appetite and aids in fat burning.
- MOVE! Short on time? High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has become very popular for this reason! These workout routines pack several intense moves into a short period of time and can be great for improving cardiovascular fitness.
- REST! Making recovery time a priority will actually increase your ability to maintain a consistent workout regimen. Make sure to stretch, hydrate, and get in as many hours of sleep as possible!

CHOICES CORNER: ADDICTION IS REAL
| |
The most common form of addiction is alcohol and drug related. People can be addicted to not only alcohol and drugs but to behaviors such as overeating, gaming, internet, relationships, caffeine, nicotine, people, sex, pornography, shopping, theft, and other high risk behaviors.
Often times, families do not always share their family history of past addictions for various reasons. Parents and caretakers, if your child is not aware of any family history of drug, alcohol, or mental illness, it is imperative to have that discussion with your teen. One in every six people will struggle with addiction. People who have a genetic predisposition or addiction anywhere in their family tree are 40-60% more likely to become addicted to something in their lifetime. Tragedies happen often as it relates to drug and alcohol related instances. Fortunately, these kinds of high risk behaviors can be preventable with family discussions and proper education. This month Choices will highlight specific addictions on sex/pornography, gambling, social media, and Internet addiction.
Parents, if you have questions and want more ways and ideas to discuss this matter with your teen, please contact me at elumpkin@councilonrecovery.org or please make an appointment by calling 281-920-8000 ext. 6144.
