DRESS CODE REMINDER FROM ADMINISTRATION
| |
Last month, Westside students were reminded of campus policies regarding dress code. As always, we need your involvement to ensure students come to school dressed appropriately and ready to learn. We would like to take this opportunity to remind our families of our campus dress code policy and consequences for violations of the dress code.
CONSEQUENCES FOR VIOLATING THE DRESS CODE
Students are expected to comply with dress code. Any staff member who observes a student violating dress code policy may correct the behavior. In some cases, it is necessary for a dean or teacher to temporarily confiscate an item belonging to a student. Disrespect or failure to comply will significantly escalate disciplinary action.
First offense: Student may be given the opportunity to change into appropriate clothing (if not feasible, the student will be sent to ISS). He/she will be given a written warning. Parents may be notified by telephone of the infraction.
Second offense: Student may be given the opportunity to change into appropriate clothes (if not feasible, the student will be sent to ISS). In addition, he/she will be assigned Westside Workforce. Parents will be notified by telephone of the infraction.
Third offense: Student will be assigned ISS for the remainder of the day. Parents will be notified by telephone of the infraction.
STUDENTS SHOULD WEAR:
- Westside ID.
- for girls, tops that are wider than 3 inches at the shoulder and cover the back and midriff.
- for boys, tops that have sleeves.
- jeans, khakis, slacks, sweatpants, skirts, shorts, or dresses that do not rise more than 4 inches above the knee
- tights and leggings if underneath clothing (skirts, dresses, etc) that is in dress code.
- appropriate footwear.
STUDENTS CANNOT WEAR:
- bandanas or bandana printed material.
- chains hanging from jeans.
- clothing and accessories (including lanyards, key chains, etc.) that directly or indirectly displays in inappropriate images or language (including references to drugs, alcohol, illicit acts, weapons, violence, or anything that can be perceived as offensive to ethnicity, gender, religion, etc.)
- clothing that depicts identified gang symbols or represent gang affiliations. If dress/accessories seemingly fit(s) the profile of gang affiliation, administration reserves authority to disallow it.
- clothing that is ripped or torn, even if material is behind the tear.
- clothing that reveals cleavage.
- clothing which reveals undergarments.
- head-coverings. This includes but is not limited to baseball caps, wave caps, sleep wear, knitted hats, etc. Head-coverings must be placed out of sight upon entering the building. Exceptions for the head-wear policy will be made only for religious or medical reasons.
- jeans or shorts which reveal boxer shorts or athletic shorts underneath. "Sagging" is not permitted, and when necessary, cinch ties will be used by administration to tie belt loops.
- leggings/jeggings/tights/yoga pants/dancewear (unless under clothing within dress code).
- long/oversized coats inside the building.
- offensive tattoos.
- skirts/shorts that are shorter than four inches from the knee.
- sleepwear (such as slippers or pajama pants); stuffed animals, pillows, or blankets are not to be carried.
- sunglasses
- tops that show midriffs; midriffs should be covered even with arms raised above the head.
Westside High School administration reserves the right to determine if a student's dress is a disruption to the educational process. All such decisions are final.
Confiscated hats or accessories must be picked up by the parent. They will not be returned directly to the student. Per HISD Code of Conduct, district employees are not held responsible for items that are confiscated in the normal course of school business. At the end of the year, unclaimed hats will be donated.

WESTSIDE WELLNESS: ROUTINES
| |
As we begin the new year and start back to work and school, it can take some time to redevelop a daily routine. Making time to schedule in simple self-care practices can transform our time and set us up for more productive days. Reduce stress and boost success with these refreshing morning rituals!
- Do a quick workout! A 10 minute high intensity workout or a 5 minute morning yoga routine can easily be found on YouTube and will energize you for the day.
- Listen to a motivational talk or your own morning playlist as you get dressed and prepare for the day!
- Take a few minutes to meditate, journal, or just collect your thoughts-centering and setting an intention for the day will provide a purpose to proceed with.
- Have a healthy, mood-boosting breakfast: Try an egg on toast or a mix of avocado, tomatoes, and brown rice. A side of fruit and cup of warm tea will balance your meal!
Commit to trying out your chosen ritual for two weeks and see how you feel!
