BAND'S WINTER MARCH-A-THON
Westside Band's 2nd Annual Winter March-A-Thon was a big hit as the band members marched around Lakes of Parkway, stopping often a homes to play songs of the homeowner's choice!

Many residents even chose to host a party with our band bringing the festive spirit of the holidays.  Students added to the fun by dressing up in costume as they marched through the streets. Donations collected will help the band purchase new instruments which are greatly needed.

WESTSIDE WELLNESS: CLEAN HOME, CLEAR MIND
While spring cleaning is a popular ritual, we often forget about decluttering in the colder months. Periodically sorting through our belongings and removing clutter from our homes (bedrooms in particular) does more than just improve the looks of our surroundings; there are proven mental health benefits of cleaning!
  • Increased clarity & creativity:  A clear environment leaves room for better critical thinking, as well as providing space for fun and creative activities.
  • Reduced stress:  Removing clutter cuts down on general feelings of overwhelm.
  • Improved allergies:  Cleaning out areas that may collect dust or mold can work wonders for health!
  • Higher levels of success:  A more organized life makes meeting deadlines and reaching goals come naturally.
  • Emotional freedom:  Give away or recycle any items that hold bad memories!
*Bonus:  Most people end up finding lost money and other valuables during decluttering projects!
CHOICES CORNER: STRESS MANAGEMENT
Excitement, stress, joy, sadness, anxiety, confusion are all emotions we may feel at one point or another during the holidays. Due to an increase in homework, finals, projects due all contribute to those feelings. Parents, our teens feel the stress of the holidays, especially if you are stressed. Participating in ways to reduce the stress level, or distress, and create eustress, or good stress, is the goal. Eustress stress is temporary, motivating, improves our performance, helps us overcome challenges, and achieve a goal are just a few. Distress is the exact opposite.

One way to manage distress is to participate in meditations, so that our distress turns into eustress. Meditation means to drop everything that is in one's mind and to come to a state where only consciousness and awareness remains. It helps if you are in an atmosphere free from distraction.

In order to prepare for meditation, begin by sitting in a chair comfortably in a calm and quiet space with your feet flat on the ground. Start by breathing easy from the abdomen, often referred to as "belly breathing". Then, rotate the head in easy, slow circles; change direction and rotate in slow, easy circles. Look up, tilt your head way back, look down, and put your chin to your chest. Next, drop your arms and hands to the side and shake them gently and easily. Raise your feet off of the floor and gently and easily shake the knees. Make sure to straighten your spine while meditating. Practice and repeat two times.

After repeating this twice, close your eyes and try to relax your mind and do not make an effort to think about anything; slowly your mind will clear and relax. Do this for about two minutes and then open your eyes. When you are done, check in with yourself, are you feeling more relaxed and balanced? If you don't right away, with daily practice you will start to see a change within yourself.

For more information in managing distress or increasing eustress, please come by the CHOICES room in N144 or email me at elumpkin@councilonrecovery.org.
