WESTSIDE WELLNESS: PERKS OF THE PARK
| |
Our wonderful cooler weather means busier parks and trails; everyone wants to take advantage of being outside during this season of comfortable temperatures.
Not only is it enjoyable to step outdoors for more than five minutes without breaking a sweat, but there are actually numerous health benefits of spending time in a natural environment:
- Taking a break from the screens we all stare at can improve eyesight, enhance creativity, and allow us to be more connected in our relationships.
- Exposure to sunlight provides Vitamin D, boosting both your mood and your immune system.
- Moving your body outdoors is a fun and natural way to exercise, improving fitness and flexibility.
- Time spent in nature promotes relaxation, and being in sunlight during the day enhances production of melatonin at night.
Even outdoor scenery within the city, such as Hershey Park, connects us with the beauty of the world around us. So put on your shoes (or go barefoot), and get moving!

'Oh my gosh, I'm so fat, ugh!', 'I need to lose 10 pounds', and 'She should not be wearing that', are all examples of fat talk. Statements like these are what girls engage in that perpetuate the opposite of what's being vocalized.
Fat talk phrases don't encourage us to lose weight, nor do they demonstrate having a healthy body image. If we use phrases like 'You look good girl' and 'Don't you look beautiful' on a regular basis, we can eliminate fat talk. Only 9% of the 90% of females who engage in fat talk are clinically overweight. The pressure of being beautiful based on what the media portrays can be hard to deal with, especially if we compare ourselves to those figures. It's so easy to call ourselves fat, believe we are not small enough, or feel as though we don't look as good as the next girl. Comparing ourselves to others contributes to a negative body image. Lets continue to enhance our positive body image by: - Complimenting other girls
- Telling yourself positive things in the mirror
- Having constant positive thoughts about yourself
- Write down everything you love about yourself and repeat it in your head
- Accept compliments with a smile (this shows and embraces confidence)
Guys! We want you to be a part of being Fat Talk free! If you see a young lady, tell her 'You look nice' or 'I like your new haircut'. This encourages "free from fat talk" at Westside.
Although fat talk is a girl phenomenon, guys engage in body image talk a little bit differently. Guys' version of fat talk may consist of talking about being more muscular or being too thin. We want you to participate in encouraging other young men saying, 'Hey bro let's go to the gym' or 'Let's hit the track or play basketball after school'. These are all ways to promote a healthy body image and self-confidence. Come on Westside, lets continue with positive ways to engage with each other!
For more ways to develop a positive body image please contact Ms. Lumpkin at elumpki1@houstonisd.org or stop by Room N144. If you don't want to come alone, bring a friend!
