ELLIOT HONORED WITH
ALL-AMERICAN GAME SELECTION

Senior Jordan Elliott was officially invited to play in the U.S. Army All American Bowl in a ceremony that took place at Westside High School, last Tuesday.

The bowl game will be played Saturday, January 9, 2016. in San Antonio, at the Alamodome. This special invitation will be extended to 90 high school seniors throughout the United States.

Jordan was invited to play because of his outstanding athleticism on the field, but also because of his impressive academic record as well. He also exemplifies the character traits highly embodied by the United States Army. The character traits spell out the U.S. Army's tag line - LDRSHIP: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage.

We look forward to watching Jordan on national television as he plays for the West, and how fitting, considering he is coming from Westside High School!
INERTIA TEAMS WITH UP WITH
THE HOUSTON SYMPHONY
After two sold out Random Acts of Dance shows, Inertia finished the week with 2 wonderful performances as guest artists for Houston Symphony. They braved the weather on Saturday morning to dance in the Symphony's annual Halloween Children's Concert. These dedicated students gave up their early dismissal afternoon to rehearse in Jones Hall, downtown. Then on October 31st, they were up bright and early to be on stage at 10 a.m.

Dancing to rendition's of "Thriller", "The Time Warp", and the classic "Dance Macabre", Inertian's once again represented Westside on the grand stage. Director Bryan Paule has already received email from parents wanting their children to attend Westside!

Participating Students: Kendra Fernandez, Sarah McBride, Danna Tao, Kiara Guyton, Leilenn Ward, Hector Cisneros, Antonio Olivares, Freddy Ezeala, Floyd Worsley, and Jason Levine. Choreography and Direction: Bryan Paule and Sharon Roberts
T-PRO SCARES UP LAUGHS WITH
GREAT PERFORMANCES

Westside's Varsity Theater Company gave four performances of Blithe Spirit last weekend, which filled the Black Box to the brim despite bad weather!

This 40's British farce was filled with séance's, grey ghosts, and lots of laughs! The season continues with Flowers for Algernon November 12-14. Tickets will be available soon!

DEBATE TEAM TRAVELS TO SAN ANTONIO
This past weekend, the Westside Debate Team competed at the Saint Mary's Hall Debate Tournament in San Antonio, Texas.

Syed Raza, Timothy Gao, Sarah Hudson, Nicholas Foston, and Andy Nguyen advanced to the Semi-Finals in Extemporaneous Speaking.

Syed Raza and Timothy Gao (pictured above) advanced to Finals in Public Forum Debate.
CLASS FINDING OUT HOW DIFFICULT THINGS WERE
Ms. Kwezi's classes really got to see how it felt to paint a ceiling, as they laid on their backs to sketch under their desks.

This simulated how Michaelangelo painted the Sistine chapel because he had to lay on his back to complete his masterpiece.
WESTSIDE WELLNESS: MOTIVATION TO MOVE
Newcomers to fitness are often driven by health-related issues or a desire for more body confidence. However, there are many mental health motivators that just might get you taking the stairs, lifting weights, or going for a jog!
  • Exercise reduces anxiety and depression by balancing hormones and refocusing energy to improve relaxation.
  • Regular physical activity improves performance at work and in school because it increases brain cells and boosts awareness and mental concentration.
  • A workout routine can help to raise pain tolerance, enhancing traits such as discipline and dedication as well.
  • Addictions and bad habits alike can be managed by channeling energy into challenging oneself physically.
  • Endorphins released during exercise are mood and confidence boosters!
Ideally, we would all work out at the same time every day for a minimum of 30 minutes, but busy work and school schedules do not always allow for this routine. Try to pick at least 4 days a week (including weekends!) to schedule in a jog, do weight bearing exercises, or try out one of the many free exercise and yoga videos available online!
CHOICES CORNER: BODY IMAGE
More than half of young people report thinking about their weight or appearance frequently and sometimes throughout the day.

Although young males percentages are not as high as young ladies, it was pretty close.
How do you feel about yourself when you look in the mirror? What thoughts or feelings come to mind? Body image is how we view, think, and believe about ourselves as well as how we feel in our own bodies and how we perceive others to view our bodies.

Developing a positive body image comes over time with practicing self-love and compassion while abstaining from all drug and alcohol use. Using substances, affects our thoughts and perceptions of ourselves due to the structural changes that happen when we use substances.

A negative body image includes having distorted perceptions of yourself, feeling ashamed, uncomfortable, and overly self-conscious about your body, believing that you are not attractive and do not deserve to be complimented by others. Having a positive body image is being able to accept your body as it is, complimenting yourself by saying or thinking kind words to yourself, eating healthy, staying physically active (i.e. sports, walking, jogging, dance, etc.) and feeling comfortable in your own body.

Exercising positive body image through self-love and compassion looks like continuously striving to excel even when you feel as though you have failed, believing in yourself, accepting yourself, being kind to yourself, and giving yourself a chance.

Look for more topics this month including fat talk (anorexia and bulimia nervosa), self-harm, and suicide. For more information please contact Ms. Lumpkin in Room N144.
