COLOR RUN RACES TO BEAT STORM
|
Despite the oncoming storm, the Howl-o-ween Color Run was squeezed in before the rain really started to fall. It was dark when everybody arrived to check in, and the storm clouds kept it gloomy, but that didn't stop the runners, nor the color!
|

JUNIOR FINISHES MUDDY REGIONALS
IN TOP QUARTILE
| |
Junior Axel Streit crossed the finish line 46th, out of 181, at Regional Cross Country Meet, earlier today.
This is is an impressive finish, especially with the current course conditions.
Heavy storms and flooding from this past weekend turned the cross country course at Sam Houston State University into a mud pit. The picture on the right is Axel before the race, while the picture below is him after the race.
Normally, the runners cross the finish line lighter than when they started because they sweat a lot. However, Axel finished weighing more, which was due to the muddy course conditions. Check out the difference in his socks!

GIRLS SWIM TEAM STARTS SEASON WITH WIN
| |
The girls swim team earned a hard-fought victory against Klein High School, while the boys fell short. The expectations are high for both the girls and boys teams after last year's season. The girls are looking to repeat as District Champions.
The next meet is away at Cy Springs against Cy Springs and Jersey Village next Tuesday, November 3. The next home meet is against Bellaire on November 17.
|
TEAM TENNIS SEASON ENDS IN AREA
| |
The team-tennis season ended last week at Cinco Ranch High School in the Area Playoffs. The Cougars took down our Wolves just as a storm entered the area. With rain starting as the match was ending, the bright spot ahead was the individual season on the horizon.

WESTSIDE WELLNESS: HEALTHY SWAPS
| |
Fall holidays bring celebration and appreciation; however, they also tend to encourage overindulgence in processed and heavy foods. This leaves many of us feeling foggy, lethargic, and disappointed. Let's avoid feeling sluggish (and gaining weight) around the holidays this year! Indulge in smaller portions of your classic holiday foods, and make these simple ingredient swaps to maintain and increase your energy! - Hamburger/hot dog buns-lettuce wraps
- Margarine/mayonnaise-real butter, coconut oil, avocado
- Sugar-real maple syrup, honey, agave, vanilla extract, cinnamon
- Salt-dried/fresh spices (garlic, basil, ginger)
- Sour cream/cream cheese-plain/Greek yogurt, cottage cheese
- French fries-sweet potato fries
- Potato chips-air popped popcorn
- White rice-brown rice, quinoa
- Flour tortilla-whole wheat or corn tortilla
- Ranch dip-hummus, olive oil & spices
- Canned/creamed vegetables-sautéed fresh or frozen veggies
- White pasta-whole wheat or rice pasta; spaghetti squash
- Fried Chicken-seasoned baked chicken
Once you adjust to these swaps, you'll get used to (and probably prefer) the taste! with recipes!

CHOICES CORNER: PEER PRESSURE
| |
Adolescents are likely to socialize with one another to display specific behaviors to be accepted by peers, including bullying. Knowingly and unknowingly we may engage in bullying acts because of peer pressure.
Peer pressure is not always identifiable; there are situations that we all have been in that may have made us feel uncomfortable. Knowing ways to overcome those fears and becoming an advocate for ourselves is important. Advocating for ourselves brings self-confidence and boosts self-esteem. Peer pressure can be both positive and negative. Positive peer pressure can be used for a beneficial change and cause feelings of empowerment and encouragement or in the form of a study group. Negative peer pressure influences us to do something outside of our comfort zone, because "everyone is doing it." Feelings of discouragement, or putting ourselves in danger, and acting outside of our value system could be ways of how we may experience negative peer pressure. This may look like engaging in any high risk behaviors such as drugs, alcohol, sex, violence and other activities that inhibits our prefrontal cortex from developing to its full potential. How do we overcome negative peer pressure to avoid all types of bullying?
- Understand your comfort level and your own values and beliefs
- Have self-confidence
- Choose your friends wisely
- Talk to a trusted adult
- Don't make excuses - say exactly how you feel
Food for thought: Have your friends ever asked you to do something you didn't want to do? One of the ways we gain confidence and are able to stand up for ourselves is to practice coming up with reasons not to do that particular activity next time.
