RUNNER PACES SELF INTO REGIONALS

Axel Streit qualified for the Region III Cross Country Championship by placing 4th at District. Regional will be held at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, on October 26.
Alex said the team hit its stride at the right time. The turning point in the the season for the team was at the Kempner Classic Meet.
"Almost everybody P-R-ed (Got a Personal Record)," Alex said. "Everybody really gutted it out and kept fighting through the race."
The team is a pretty close unit. On Late Start Thursdays after the team runs, they eat breakfast together.

WESTSIDE WELLNESS: SLEEP

As I have gotten close with many students this semester, I have gained insight into many of their daily habits. One huge theme: lack of sleep! Teenagers have developing brains and bodies, and many are going to sleep at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning.
Coming to school without a night of rest to recharge means arriving unprepared for the highest level of success. We all know that sleep is important, but here is a breakdown of just how crucial it is: Lack of sleep can cause: -Increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke -Rise in blood pressure -Mental fog and lack of focus -Falling behind on deadlines -Weight gain and a decrease in metabolism -Depression, anxiety, and low mood -High levels of stress
On the other hand, benefits of getting enough sleep include: -Sharper memory and improved attention span -Reduced risk of body aches -Higher confidence level -Brighter skin and eyes -Weight loss or stabilization -Overall better mood -Improved performance in academics and sports -Longer life span!
Please try and make this a priority for you and your kids!

CHOICES CORNER: BULLYING VS. HAZING

Here are some common terms and language we all need to be aware of so that we don't accidentally or purposefully engage in bullying acts. As we all continue to educate ourselves, we can embrace being an upstander naturally. (Source)
Characteristics of Bullying
Perpetrator: The person(s) doing the bullying Victim: The individual being bullied Upstander: A person that speaks up and steps up to those being bullied; they are a voice for the victims Bystander: One who witnesses cyberbullying or traditional bullying and does nothing
Types of Bullying
Verbal: Verbal bullying includes name-calling, insults, teasing, intimidation, homophobic or racist remarks, or verbal abuse. Physical: Physical bullying includes hitting, kicking, tripping, pinching and pushing or damaging property. Social/Relational: This sort of bullying is often harder to recognize and can be carried out behind the bullied person's back. It is designed to harm someone's social reputation and/or cause humiliation. Covert bullying includes: * lying and spreading rumors * negative facial or physical gestures, menacing or
contemptuous looks * playing nasty jokes to embarrass and humiliate * mimicking unkindly * encouraging others to socially exclude someone * damaging someone's social reputation or social acceptance. (Source)
Types of Cyberbullying Engagements
Flaming: An intense angry argument carried out over instant messaging, social networks, or chat rooms. Anonymity: Any form of harassment or threats issued by an anonymous bully. The harasser may use an online alias (also known as a screen name), a blocked number, or a borrowed cell phone to bully, making it difficult to determine their identity.
Masquerading/Catfishing: Occurs when a cyber-bully goes to great lengths to make themselves appear to be someone they are not. For example, a cyber-bully may set up a Facebook profile under another student's name and use it to harass people.
Outing: A public showing of personal conversations. Outing occurs when the harasser prints or displays email, text, or chat communication that the victim intended to be kept private. Hazing: Hazing is any action or situation created by a group to intentionally produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule among those wishing to join the group. Hazing is a form of bullying and differs in the following ways: 1. Bullying excludes the victim from a group whereas hazing is a ritual imposed on a person who wants to join a group. 2. Bullies often act alone or in small groups, but hazing commonly involves an entire group or team.
Hazing includes the following: * To make victims act in embarrassing or humiliating ways * To swear and yell insults at victims * To deprive individuals of sleep or restrict personal hygiene * To force victims to eat vile substances * To physically beat individuals * To force binge drinking * To sexually assault victims (Source)
