PSAT IS WEDNESDAY
This Wednesday, October 14, all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will be taking the PSAT.

It is very important that students report to their homerooms on time, 7:55 a.m. They will need to bring 2 sharpened #2 pencils and their calculator with them.  The school will not be providing calculators.

Any type of graphing calculator will do, but a calculator on a cell phone can NOT be used. The instructions state that all questions can be answered without one, but most students  bring one when they are taking the SAT.

Since this is the preparation for the SAT, students will probably would want to use a calculator. It doesn't have to be an expensive one. The students must wear their school ID's.
SENIOR ASSEMBLY DURING PSAT
This Wednesday, October 14, there will be a Senior Class assembly in the Westside auditorium. Students must arrive on campus between 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., with their Power Up laptops. The meeting will begin promptly at 10:50 a.m.

Students will receive their class fundraiser that will run from October 14-28. Students will also vote on class t-shirts and prom themes through the HUB. The senior class events calendar will be reviewed with the students. In addition, students will receive information regarding credit appeal, Grad Lab, attendance, college applications, among other important topics regarding senior year.

Students will be released for lunch at 11:50 a.m. Seniors will be expected to return to campus to attend 4th period, which will begin at 12:50 p.m. Attendance at the senior class assembly is mandatory, so please encourage your students to arrive at the assembly on time.

WESTSIDE WELLNESS:
BOOSTING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM
As the weather cools off and the wind stirs pollen and mold into the air, many of us start feeling under the weather. Before you dive into a daily antihistamine routine, try giving your meals an immune boost with these powerful ingredients!

Garlic is anti-inflammatory and helps to boost circulation. Try sautéing in a pan or roasting in the oven and mixing in with a veggie and rice dish.

Cayenne pepper promotes digestion and contains infection-fighting vitamin C. Use ground cayenne to add a kick to a salad or chicken dish.

Cinnamon helps to boost metabolism and fight viruses. Add to cereal and sprinkle in hot drinks, such as coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.

Ginger detoxifies and can even help reduce symptoms of asthma. Chop ginger to add to a salmon dish, or drop into boiling water with lemon for a homemade tea.

Spinach is packed full of vitamins and can help lower blood pressure and reduce acidity in the body. Sautee with garlic in coconut oil or toss into a big green smoothie!

CHOICES CORNER: BULLYING
An average of 105 individuals end their lives every day. A percentage of those individuals ended their lives because of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying differs from traditional bullying in that an incident can be repeated whether it be a text, post, snap, video or email that is forwarded to multiple people or posted online and viewed by others (Waasdorp, 2015).

Cyberbullying can still occur even after it has been deleted on your device or someone else's. Have you ever posted something because you thought it was funny, not realizing the possible risks of what the other person may go through or feel like? Once the information, picture, video, text, screenshot or link is created and sent, there is a high chance that it will never be deleted.

Although we may unintentionally post or forward something, we want to be aware of the possible consequences of our choices. Cyberbullying negatively affects our self-esteem, academic performances and causes the possible risk of suicidal ideation (den, 2015). Suicidal ideation is self-reported thoughts of engaging in suicide-related behavior such as the thoughts of ending one's own life and or attempts to end one's own life.

When we are bullied, our emotions are expressed internally or externally and maybe a little bit of both. An example of internalizing is not talking to a trusted adult or friend that may result in experiencing lasting sadness or depression. Externalizing emotions could be displayed with aggression, conduct disorder, or being oppositional.

Posting unwanted posts, images, quotes, and videos of someone else without their permission is deciding to engage in cyberbullying. No matter how little of a deal you may perceive it, it could be detrimental and or life threatening to another person. Let's continue to be Upstanders at Westside! How to Help?
  • Tell someone that they are on your mind even if they are not talking about ending their life.
  • Send a virtual hug!
  • Get your friend's addresses and send them a surprise, 'I'm thinking about you' card'. Remember, with help comes hope!
We value your feedback!
