HOMECOMING DECORATING STARTS SPIRIT WEEK!
As students and teachers walked in this morning, they could easily tell that Homecoming is in the air as ach house decorated its entrances with the theme of Through the Decades in mind.

North 1 was bebopping in the 50's with inventions from the decade, along with a diner where the stars were hangin' out - Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and many more. There were  stars in the Walk of Fame with the names of awesome teachers and administrators from the House.

East 1 came next with their Hippie theme of tie dye and peace through the 60's. This was complete with a VW van front coming through the wall and a 33 record player spinning an Elton John album.

North 2 sailed through the 70's with encouraging the Lobos to chill out and ease on down the road.  The deans and Ms. Jordan were seen in silhoutte dancing the night away!

East 2 brought on the 80's with an impressive performance by students bringing Michael Jackson's "Thriller" to life with an incredible rendition.  Then, it was time for some break dancing to the song "It's Tricky" by Run DMC even Mickey Mouse got into break dancing!

Finally, South 2 rounded out the decorating with taking everyone back to the 90's! Incredible art work bringing in beloved characters from the 90's Beavis & Butthead, PowerPuff Girls and a box cell phone and jam box, remember those? Plus, who can remember VHS tapes, cassette tapes, and floppy discs?? S2 did with them adorning the walls and falling from the ceiling!  The ultimate was seeing "The Fresh Wolf of Westside" with it's song recreated in true Westside fashion!  What a great way to get everyone in to the Homecoming Spirit this week!

Many, many thanks to the students and staff who stayed up here last Friday night and Saturday afternoon to decorate our houses and keep alive the friendly House Decorating competition! There was a tie this year - North 1 and South 2!!

TONGZHOU DELEGATION GETS TASTE OF WESTSIDE
On Monday, September 28, Westside hosted a delegation from Tongzhou, China that included 25 teachers and administrators from various schools in China.

They are visiting Houston for 14 days. Westside was the only HISD school that the delegation visited, and we were excited for them to experience WHS. The delegation toured classrooms with an administrator and a Westside student and were treated to a special lunch prepared by our chefs and culinary students.

The delegation saw what American classrooms look and feel like. They learned about Westside's effective teaching practices, creative learning, PowerUp, and the infusion of technology.

The highlight of the tour was the delicious lunch prepared by Chef Martin, Chef Bell, and their culinary students. The menu began with a Field Green Salad with Strawberries, Spiced Pecans and Balsamic Vinaigrette, then was followed by Pan Seared Salmon with Spicy Shrimp Cream Sauce, served with Potato Puree and Sauteed and completed with Chocolate Mousse Cake.

All of this was plated and served by our outstanding students. The delegation enjoyed being hosted in such an incredibly friendly and innovative learning environment. Westside has a lot to be proud of when we have such distinguished visitors coming to our campus. Many compliments go to our staff and students!
WESTSIDE WELLNESS:
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Breast cancer accounts for 1 in 3 of all cancers diagnosed in the U.S. In their lifetime, 1 in 1,000 men will be diagnosed, while women have a risk of 1 in 8. Age and gender are the primary risk factors for developing breast cancer, and older women are clearly the most susceptible.

Early detection and prevention are key, and here are 5 ways to decrease your risk:

1. Know your family history- women whose female relatives have been diagnosed are at a higher risk.
2. Schedule a mammogram- women over 40 should be doing this annually, as well as performing self-exams.
3. Get moving! Keeping a regular exercise routine and avoiding sitting for long periods of time reduces risk.
4. Quit smoking, and cut back on alcohol and processed foods in order to maintain healthy hormones.
5. Protect yourself- studies link exposure to radiation and environmental pollution (such as vehicle exhaust) with higher risk of breast cancer.

Please contact me if you have any questions. Email me at sophie.brame@healthcorps.org. You can find me in my office, L102, inside the Library.
CHOICES CORNER: BULLYING
Did you know 70.6% of youth have witnessed bullying according to http://www.stopbullying.gov/?

Bullying is a major concern and Choices needs your help in engaging in non-bullying acts. Bullying is an unwanted aggressive behavior that occurs repeatedly against a person (the victim), when there is an "observed or perceived" power imbalance. This includes physical, verbal, and relational (social) forms (Waasdrop, 2015).
Bullying is happening if:
  • The person is being hurt, harmed or humiliated with words or behavior.
  • The behavior is repeated, though it can be a single incident.
  • It is being done intentionally.
  • The person being hurt has a hard time defending him or herself from the behavior.
  • The student(s) who are doing it seemingly have more power.
  • "Power" can include such things as being older, being physically bigger or stronger, having more social status, or when a group of students "gang up" on someone. http://www.pacerteensagainstbullying.org/tab/bullying-defined/
Why? Individuals are bullied based on looks (55%), body shape (37%), and race (16%). Unfortunately, students with disabilities are bullied two to three times more than their peers.

Westside, let's come together and demonstrate what being an upstander really is and choose not to be a bystander!

Cyber Fact: Cyberbullying behaviors increase over time when there is a high exposure to antisocial media content.
