Each week, students will use a new tech tool to build a learning product. WESTSIDE WELLNESS
| |
A full day of academics requires an alert and focused mind, and ensuring proper hydration is key to preparing a student for success.
While most know the consequences of severe dehydration, parents and students alike often overlook the effects of mild dehydration. Students who complain of headaches, fatigue, mood changes, and lack of focus may simply need to increase their intake of water! Drinking at least one full glass of water every couple of hours will replenish energy, flush toxins, stabilize mood, and increase alertness. Although the morning rush to school does not always allow for much preparation, sending children with a bottle that they can refill at the water fountain will up the odds that they will stay hydrated throughout the day. It also decreases the urge to reach for artificially sweetened vending machine drinks that will dehydrate them. High schoolers are faced with plenty of daily challenges; let's not let dehydration be one of them!

CHOICES CORNER: DATING VIOLENCE
-IT'S NEVER OK
| |
The CDC defines teen dating violence as the physical, sexual, psychological, or emotional violence within a dating relationship, including stalking and harassment. It can occur in person or electronically and might occur between a current or former dating partner.
Reports indicate 25 percent of dating teens admit they have been digitally victimized by their partners, yet only 9 percent seek help - rarely from parents or teachers. It is never, ever okay to physically, emotionally, or sexually abuse or harass anyone, even if you are upset. When we act out of hurt, anger, sadness, frustration, or other emotions, we fail to use our prefrontal cortex and use our amygdala instead. This means we are not using our most mature decision making skills.
Unfortunately, during dating violence, the victims go through feeling guilty or sadness, may turn to substances, and have an increased likelihood of a mental illness like anxiety or depression. Having feelings of anger and frustration are perfectly okay, but it is how we channel that energy that is really important. We all have to keep ourselves and others safe by exercising other alternatives of expressing ourselves in a healthy manner. Remember, our brains are not fully developed until the ages 25 or 26. If we utilize healthy choices (like the ones listed below), we help shape our brain to its full potential.
Healthy Choices to deal with anger and frustration in relationships:
- Engage in a sport-like activity (walking, running, basketball, football, soccer, swim, dance, etc.)
- Listen to music
- Ask for a break and revisit later after emotions are calm
- Watch a funny movie
- Draw or paint on a canvas (CHOICES has one for you to use)
- Breathe!
- Skateboard
- Ask a teacher if you can help with something after school
- Write it down
- Talk to a trusted adult (Come to the Choices room if you are having some concerns)
Download the My Calm Beats App if you want guidance with breathing.
For more information come by the Choices room in N144! Choices cares and the services provided are confidential. Come by to gain support for a healthy lifestyle. Your friends are welcome too!
