WRANGLER ROUND-UP

Dean Pliskin is looking for some guys who can handle the beast pictured above.

If you think you got what it takes, there will be an informational meeting Tuesday, September 15, at 3:30 p.m., in room E107.
PowerUp PopUp

You must've heard about PowerUp, one way or another. Each week, we want to highlight something that the campus saw "PopUp" from the PowerUp initiative.

This week, Ms. Merriweather's Kickboard classroom management is our PopUp.

Ms. Merriweather uses an awesome tool to track behavior, which students earn a check at the end of the week. The more they go above and beyond, the bigger the check.

They can cash in their checks for a field trip, homework passes, and more. Even better - she has student accountants to help make it possible.

SPIRIT NIGHT

PARENT TEACHER NIGHT
Make plans to be at Westside to meet your student's teachers, this coming Monday, September 21, at 6:15 p.m. Be sure to bring your student's schedule so you can walk a day in their shoes and meet the educators who will be working with your student this year!

Also, please bring one or more of the following (always needed, always necessary) supplies for our teachers!

Westside's amazing PTO will be collecting these items in the HOT (Help Our Teachers!) Supplies Drive. When you arrive at the school on this evening, students will be on  hand to collect them.

Items needed are boxes of tissues, hand sanitizers, paper towels, disinfecting wipes.
DANCE WITH PRIDE
Dance With Pride
It's that time of year to get on board with the annual Dance With Pride Festivities. The fun is September 19, from 9 a.m. to noon.

This is a unique opportunity for any boy or girl from 4 years old through 8th grade to learn some new moves and perform at a football game.

Click here for more details and the application. The pre-registration is due September 15.
TEACHER GETS PRIMATIVE WITH STUDENTS
In an attempt to make history come to life, Ms. Kwezi decided to try cave painting with the students to duplicate the Paleolithic age.  They are also studying social media for Linked Learning and what better to experience it, than the original social media of the Stone Age.

"I found an activity online on how to make authentic cave paint," Ms. Kwezi said. "About 30 students decided to stay.
We started by gathering twigs to stir with and dirt.  They used charcoal pieces to make their drawings.  Then they mixed dirt with water and animal fat (Crisco) to make the paint."

After that, things got a bit messy, which made it even more fun!

STUDENT CONGRESS
HISD's Student Congress met this past Saturday, September 12. Representing Westside High School were Kaitlyn Gabaldon, Autumn Caraway, and Bidisha Nandi.
WESTSIDE READS!
If you pass by the library at Parent/Teacher Night, you'll see a display on the wall about how "Westside Reads."

Here are a few pieces of the display.

WESTSIDE WELLNESS
This school year has brought a new partnership to Westside! HealthCorps is a nonprofit organization working to combat the childhood obesity epidemic and to build a nationwide awareness of health and wellbeing. Our campus representative is Ms. Sophie Brame.

As a HealthCorps Coordinator, my goals are to connect with high school students and to educate them on practical ways to implement nutrition, fitness, and mental health concepts in their daily lives.

I will be guest speaking in classrooms and supporting after school and lunchtime clubs throughout the year, as well as hosting health education booths and office hours to meet with students directly.

Please contact me if you are interested in healthy eating plans for your family, or with any other program questions.
Email me at sophie.brame@healthcorps.org. You can find me in my office, L102, inside the Library.
CHOICES CORNER: BOUNDARIES
WHO DOESN'T WANT RESPECT?
Boundaries are a set of limits that protect a person from being a victim. It also means being assertive without being offensive and allows one to experience other people's boundaries without being offended.

Did you know setting boundaries enhances our self-confidence? These types of limits teaches others assertively how we want to be treated. In healthy relationships, boundaries are set whether it be in a romantic relationship, with friends, family, or even professionally.

Individuals who exercise boundary setting will most likely be respected and give respect to others. Boundaries come in different forms such as digital, emotional (internal), physical (external), and social. Setting a digital boundary involves knowing what kind of media engagement you are or are not willing to engage in.

For example, do you or do you not want your mom, boyfriend, or girlfriend being friends with your friends? Do you want your relationship status public with the person you are with? This stuff can get really confusing. These questions are based on how comfortable you are.

Once you know your comfort level, then boundary setting can begin. With external physical boundaries we have the right to protect our physical body; we have the right to control how close others get to us and control how close we get to others.

Emotional internal boundary setting involves how we will protect our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Social boundaries include setting limitations on the social interactions you have with others and choosing the role you engage in with others and limiting. Before setting boundaries, it is important for us to know what we want first and to be clear. Be sure to brainstorm your boundaries first!

We value your feedback!
