SAILING TAKES STUDENT ABROAD

While the summer brings about time to relax and vacation, Charlotte Rose was hard at work. She was busy sailing and climbing...climbing the world rankings to 130 in the world.

She has excelled at her sailing this summer culminating in representing USA in the Laser Radial Youth Worlds in Canada. Charlotte finished 22nd overall and was third in the Under 17 category.

Charlotte currently sits at 130 in the world for Laser Radial Women and is currently the sixth ranked USA female sailor in this class.

While she stayed in North America for much of her summer, sailing in both the US and Canada, her expertise took her to Europe to sail in Germany.

TEACHER BRINGS CLEOPATRA TO LIFE
Ms. Kwezi wants to get Cleopatra's story through to her students, so she dressed up as Cleopatra, herself.

Cleopatra was the last pharaoh of Egypt and she desperately tried to hold onto her power in a man's world.  She was kicked out of her role as pharaoh by her brother's guardians and she knew the only way she could get her kingdom back would be from joining together with someone in power.

Fortunately for her, Julius Caesar was in the area fighting a battle.  It is said that she rolled herself in a carpet and had it delivered to Julius Caesar.  Imagine his surprise when a 19 year old, Egyptian queen popped out of the carpet!  He helped her get the kingdom back and they stayed partners until his murder.  At that time, she aligned herself with Mark Antony.

"I enjoy telling her story because of all the crazy things she did in order to keep her power," Kwezi said.  "During class, we also discuss elements of Egyptian Civilization such as why the Nile River was important and the use of papyrus in their writing system.  I end the presentation with events that are currently occurring in Egypt."

After Cleopatra's death, there was an earthquake that forced her palace into the sea.  The remains have been found.  There are plans to build the world's first underwater museum around what remains in the sea.  There are drawings online of what that could look like and the students enjoy hearing about it.
SOFTBALL TEAM GETS THINGS GOING

The Westside High School Lady Wolves JV and Varsity softball teams came out early Saturday morning for their first field work day of the year.

The girls take a lot of pride in this program and their field so asking them to put some love and work in on it is an easy task. The girls cleaned out under the bleachers and dugouts. As well as organized the shed.

The parents helped fix our batting cages and got them back into shape by straightening them out and fixing and re-tying the netting. It was a great turnout by both kids and parents!

Parents and coaches also supplied the kids with donuts as a thank you for their hard work!
CHOICES CORNER: HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS
One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence. It is often assumed that girls are the only victims of violence, but research shows that 37% of males are victims of dating violence. Our relationships should be free from physical, emotional, and sexual violence. Healthy relationships involves good communication, honesty, trust, respect, and compromise (Denam, 2014). This month Choices will discuss key elements to healthy relationships. During this month boundaries, conflict resolution, and dating violence will be covered - stay tuned!
