STUDENTS RALLY WITH DEAN PLISKIN
TO SUPPORT HIS FAMILY
| |
Dean Pliskin tries to be there for his students. Whether it be an issue in school or a problem at home, he reaches out to take care of his kids.
The situation was reversed for a change, and his students reached out to support him. His Aunt Ellen has had several bouts with cancer and has been going through treatment, again. Dean Pliskin would love to be with his family at his Aunt Ellen's side, but that isn't possible. That's where several of his students jumped in.
After learning about what has been going on, they got together to take a picture with a message to Aunt Ellen: "Go Ellen! Kick cancer in the butt! #teamellen".
Aunt Ellen and Dean Pliskin's mom loved the picture and the message. "It made my mom cry," Dean Pliskin said. "Being thousands of miles from my entire family is hard."
This was definitely one way he could show his support to his family while his students showed support for him.

FOOTBALL TEAM KICKS OFF NEW TRADITION
|
|
There is a first time for everything and this was one special first. In an effort to raise a little school spirit, Thursday mornings will now start off with the Thursday Throwdown. Each week, a different group of students will perform a little something to music. After the group performs, the students are asked to join in the fun. The football team was the first group to get everybody moving. It wasn't just the students, but faculty joined in, as well.
Plans are in the works to broadcast the event on the brand new jumbo screen in the Commons. Who knows who will lead the Throwdown this Thursday? The fun starts at 9:10.

CHOICES CORNER: BREAKING HABITS
| |
So maybe you or your friend don't know where or how to start. Here are some starting tips:
1. Make a list of reasons to stop. Collaborate with a trusted peer or adult.
2. Find a healthy activity to replace smoking. Activities could be going for a walk or run, journaling, painting a canvas, drawing, listen to music, and other activities that will promote healthy choices.
3. Call a trusted friend. What are friends for? Ask your friend(s) if it is okay for you to reach out to them during your transition.
4. Hang around people who don't smoke and are abstaining from substances (nicotine, tobacco, drugs, and alcohol).
5. Make your goal of abstaining from nicotine and any other substances visible! Create a personalized screensaver on your phone or computer, post a sticky note at home/locker, set alarms and reminders, create a symbol and put it on your binder, backpack, or something else you see everyday as a friendly reminder. Wear something that reminds you of your goals (see #1). Paraphernalia such as a bracelets, necklaces, earrings, socks, rings, belts, shoe laces, may be helpful.
Don't forget, have fun with this and create a plan that will work for you. Having trouble with your goals? Come to the Choices office in N144 for more information or email me: [email protected].
