THE WESTSIDE FACULTY & STAFF
ARE READY FOR A GREAT YEAR

The Westside Faculty & Staff are excited to kick off the new school year. Everybody gathered around the new football tunnel on the final day of teacher training.
Deans Williams and Pliskin don't like to name drop, but they know Westly the Wolf pretty well. They definitely run in his pack.
|
PTO WELCOMES NEW TEACHERS WITH GOODIES

Our Westside PTO wanted to welcome our new teachers with open arms, so they put together some welcome goodies.
If you look at the picture, fresh breath is obviously a staple of the Westside Faculty, so the PTO got them set up with gum, Tic Tacs, toothpaste, and a toothbrush.
The PTO sends out a warm welcome to our new teachers. Good luck and have a great year!

EMERGE HITS THE NORTHEAST

Our Westside EMERGE Fellows took a trip this summer to Boston, Massachusetts. The visit included trips to universities around the city where they applied many of the skills learned during their sessions last school year.

SUMMER BRIDGE MAKES TRANSITION EASIER

Incoming freshmen got a jump on school with a special program geared to making the transition from middle school to high school. About 60 students attended the four week program.
Highlights of the program included a Digital Day where gaming trucks set up in the parking lot for the students to enjoy. The Houston Public Library brought the largest vehicle and held sessions on video game design.
Check out a little more about the program from U.S. News here. Lookout for our own Ms. Hogan in the article.

CHOICES CORNER:
TOBACCO'S UNSUCCESSFUL COMEBACK

Hello Westside families and welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed their summers. I am so thrilled for the 2015-2016 school year, and I can't wait to share everything I have planned for the Choices program, this year.
For newcomers, Choices is a prevention and counseling program here at Westside High School in collaboration with The Council on Recovery. The mission is to reduce high-risk behavior through a comprehensive program involving all members of the school community including students, parents, and faculty. Throughout the year, Choices will focus on a different topic each month and will provide relevant events, E-News articles, handouts and more for teachers, parents, and students. My name is Ebony Lumpkin, M. Ed. and I am your new Westside High School Choices Counselor. Nice to meet you!
For the month of August, the Choices topic is "Tobacco's Unsuccessful Comeback". Did you know the tobacco use at Westside High has gone down? Yep, it surely has! Despite that trend on our campus, tobacco smoking still causes more deaths annually than HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries and firearm-related incidents combined (thetruth.com.) It is also the number one cause of preventable deaths in the U.S. Tobacco accounts for one out of every ten deaths worldwide and claims nearly 6 million lives each year.
Big Tobacco wants you! Big Tobacco is another name for the tobacco industry. Anti-tobacco companies like thetruth.com want to reach out to teens from all walks of life in order to provide education around tobacco. Big tobacco wants teens to begin using their products at a young age so they can have them as customers well into their adulthood so they can continuously increase their profit. They use celebrities, music videos and social media to attract more and more young people everyday. Don't let them convince you to use tobacco! Check out the Choices article next week on breaking tobacco habits!
