COMMUNITY BASED VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM

The CBVI program, supervised by the Employment Representative, is a division of the Special Education Department at Westside High School.

The program is designed to provide vocational instruction and opportunities to students with disabilities. Our purpose is to reinforce appropriate social and workplace behaviors, provide on-site vocational training opportunities, and train students to utilize available transportation to travel to and from potential employment sites.

The ultimate objective is to aid students to develop their abilities to the fullest extent possible in order to allow them to live as independently as possible.

By allowing them to train in these facilities several of our students have been employed at other places and even sometimes at locations they have been trained at. By providing a CBVI site to train our students, our employers have given our students the opportunity to become productive members of society.

The store manager's, assistant managers, and employees have been great with our students. They have made our students feel important and confident when completing a job. The Employer Appreciation Luncheon is only a small token compare to what they do for our SLL ( Skills for Learning and Living) students at Westside High School.

BOYS WATER POLO GETS TASTE OF
STATE TOURNAMENT

Last Friday, the Boys Water Polo Team went up against a very good Clear Lake team. The score was 5-3 in favor of Clear Lake at half time, but during the 3rd quarter, our lack of depth in the team took its toll on the Westside players, falling behind 12 - 5. Fatigue was the main factor for the boys, having to stay in the pool for the entire game. 4th quarter the boys found some energy but fell short losing 15 - 8.

Saturday, the team played Round Rock in a consolation game dueling back and forth to a 5-5 tie, thus ending their State tournament weekend.

"The boys played their hearts out and I am extremely proud of the progress and success they had this season," Coach Sikemma said. "We all agree that the "taste" of being able to go to State is infectious, and we want to get back there next year. We have a very young team and we WILL be back!"

Luke Vrijland was voted Honorable Mention All State for the tournament.

FIRST ALUMNUS DRAFTED IN NFL

Congratulations to Martin Ifedi who was drafted by the the St. Louis Rams. That is news you think he would be on the edge of his seat waiting for, but it didn't quite happen that way.

"I went to a friends house to hang out and I thought I could watch the draft because he has cable," Martin said.

That sounds like a good plan, but apparently, having cable doesn't automatically mean you have all the channels.

"His cable package didn't include ESPN, so I couldn't even watch the draft!" Martin said. "I thought all cable packages had ESPN."

Martin had recorded the draft at home, so he was able to see it happen, after all.

We were excited to see him on campus earlier today to say hello. After graduating from Westside, Martin attended the University of Memphis.

NAME THAT BOOK

The Name That Book Team won the NTB Media Contest held by HISD's Library Services.  Winners were announced at the Name That Book  Red Carpet Event on Saturday.  Westside submitted a live-action video depicting scenes from all of the books on this year's book list.  The video will be posted on HISD's website sometime this week.

The two team members who produced the video, Celine Lillie and Natalie Stutts, each received Nooks as their prize! Houston Astros Catcher, Jason Castro, presented the award to Celine!

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK

The PTO really took care of the faculty during "Teacher Appreciation Week."

Each day was special as the faculty got a special gift or treat. The pictures you see are from the old fashion picnic, where the faculty was treated to Frenchy's Chicken. After a faculty meeting, the faculty was treated to a mashed potato bar at The Sporting News.

The entire faculty would like to extend many thanks to the PTO and especially those who put their time and effort into making us feel appreciated.

DEADLINE EXTENDED!

Students will go to Taiwan and participate in language classes as well as many other cultural activities. All students in the school can apply. Proficiency in Chinese is not required. There is a fee of $2998 that students need to pay but it includes everything, such as air ticket, lodging, food, transportation, and activities in Taiwan.

CHOICES CORNER: THANKS

Choices

Our Choices Counselor, Ms. Parsely, has accepted a job in Colorado, leaving the hallowed halls of Westside High School. The entire campus would like to thank her for her work with students, staff, and the community.

Of course, this means we won't have the Choices Corner in the E-News, nor those wonderful forums and programs Ms. Parsely facilitated. Hopefully, Westside will graced with another Choices Counselor, but her shoes will be hard to fill.

Good luck Ms. Parsely!

We value your feedback!
