BEST BUDDIES WALK GENERATES EXCITEMENT

The Best Buddies chapter met up with other chapters from around Houston for the Annual Best Buddies Walk at St. Thomas University.

Everybody had a blast walking. Our students came together for fun and enrichment on a beautiful day! For our group, the prize was getting to spend quality time together, but we were surprised and delighted to learn we also earned a trophy for Houston Chapter of the Year!

Our chapter always does the best it can, and recognition of efforts was unexpected and truly gratifying. The chapter was also recognized with a certificate for raising a significant amount of financial resources.

The Westside Best Buddies Chapter is so thankful to both our participants and our contributors for making our club possible and participating in such an exciting experience. We can't wait to see how our chapter grows!

NHS GETS NEW OFFICERS FOR 2015-16

Congratulations to the 2015-16 NHS Officers. President: Avery Valdes, Vice President: Daniel Vargas, Secretary: Bidisha Nandi

Hours:  Shannon Rouhaha and Amy Tran, Media: Khadiza Hannan

Thank you to all who ran for office. It takes a lot of self-confidence to talk in front of a group of teenagers.

INTRODUCE A GIRL TO METEOROLOGY

Last Thursday, Rockwell Collins hosted an event for a group of Westside's students. This four hour event included an overview on Meteorology, a tour and demonstrations by their Aviation and Marine Meteorology teams, an interactive panel discussion featuring some of their more recent college hires and culminated with a wrap up session and presentation of certificates.

It was a fantastic way to learn about careers in Meteorology other than broadcast news.  Keeping aviation and oil rig workers safe was fascinating to learn about.

CHOICES CORNER:
PRESCRIPTION DRUG MISUSE & ABUSE

For several years now, there have been more deaths from prescription pain reliever overdoses than from heroin and cocaine combined.  These deaths usually result from respiratory failure.  Furthermore, after marijuana and alcohol, prescription drugs are the most commonly abused substances by Americans age 14 and older.  Taken as prescribed, opioids can be used to manage pain safely and effectively; however, when abused, they can be addictive and put the person at risk for other harmful health effects.  It is very important to talk to your teens about the dangers of prescription drug abuse especially because they can get the pills from friends and relatives, sometimes without the person even knowing.

There are three kinds of prescription drugs that are commonly abused.  The first are Opioids which include painkillers like Vicodin, OxyContin, or codeine.  The next kind of prescription drugs that are abused are depressants such as Valium or Xanax.  Depressants slow down the normal activity that goes on in the brain and spinal cord.  Doctors often prescribe them for people who are anxious or can't sleep.

The last type of commonly abused prescription drugs are stimulants such as Adderall and Ritalin.   This type of drug increases activities and processes in the body.  This increased activity can boost alertness, attention, and energy.  Stimulant abuse can be extremely dangerous if abused.  Taking high doses of a stimulant can cause increased blood pressure, irregular heartbeat and dangerously high body temperatures.
