Almost there!  We've raised $10,290 so far!  Just $2,310 to go!   Click below on GO FUND ME to DONATE NOW to WESTSIDE WISHES! Together we can do this.

Westside Wishes was off to a great start when PTO received some exciting news over the weekend. A generous Westside family has pledged to match every donation from this point forward--dollar for dollar. Starting now, every new donation will be doubled! If you have not yet donated, now is the time to go to our Go Fund Me page and make your contribution. As a community, we can help push our school and our students to achieve greater success by giving teachers the resources they need to enhance their programs.

The Westside Wishes campaign will culminate in a casual adult social on Friday, April 10, from 7-9 p.m. at the home of Barbara and Peter Nassab. A suggested donation of $15/person or $25/couple will be collected at the door and 100% will be added to the fundraiser. Parents, staff and community members are all welcome and encouraged to attend. Our principal, Ms. Stewart, will be attending this fun and informal gathering as we celebrate our fundraiser and socialize with other parents and staff.

RSVPs are required. Please save the date and contact Frosy Graf at Frosy@haus71.net to reserve your place.

TEACHERS OF THE YEAR

Westside High School is proud to announce the 2014-15 teachers of the year. Jay Phillips is the Teacher of the Year, while Lauren Hacker is the New Teacher of the Year.

Both teachers are in the science department, but it is there chemistry with the students that has everybody's attention. The two teachers are just as great with faculty, as they are with students. Ms. Hacker, pictured on the left, credits the support from Mrs. Phillips, pictured on the right, as part of her success in the classroom.

Like most other teachers, Ms. Hacker is not education for the money. The most rewarding part of being a teacher for her is watching the progression of her students.

"I know it's cliché, but the moment you see the 'light bulb' come on, it's incredibly satisfying," Ms. Hacker said.

For first year teacher, Ms. Hacker, she believes her hard work is paying off.

"Being a first year teacher is a bit difficult," Ms. Hacker said. "You can't rely on the lessons you had last year-you must make them as you go.  You never know what to expect from day-to-day because you've never had these experiences before. It's pretty much a 'take things as they come' game, and you can never let the little things get to you."

It has been a while since Mrs. Phillips was a first year teacher. Her experiences in the classroom are always educational and entertaining. The faculty and staff think the world of Mrs. Phillips and are proud to have her as a collaborative colleague. Mrs. Phillips feels the same way, especially when it comes to earning this award.

"It is an unbelievable honor considering all the personality and talent in the building," Mrs. Phillips said. "I feel humbled."

The Westside family congratulates both Ms. Hacker and Mrs. Phillips as the 2014-15 Teachers of the Year.

GUEST SPEAKER SHEDS LIGHT ON BODY BUILDING

Over the last 2 weeks, PE classes have been doing a workout series on bodybuilding.com. Students were required find a workout plan that will support their goals, needs, body types, etc. During this time, they also started to research the authors of articles and workouts, then watch their videos of how they do their movements.

Coach Hicks and Coach Guy will be hosted one of those authors in their 6th period class, this past Thursday. Mr. Hunter Labrada who is an contributing author and representative for bodybuilding.com. He currently attends Texas A&M University, majoring in economics. You may recognize the name Labrada he is the son of IFBB Bodybuilding Hall of Famer Lee Labrada, who owns and operates Labrada Nutrition making nutritional products and protein powders, bars and pre-workout supplements.

Hunter said his future plans are to continue writing for bodybuilding.com, write a book on youth body building and staying in shape, continue his own body building career, and help run his father's company. Click here for Hunter's Bio.

GIRLS BASKETBALL EARNS SLEW OF HONORS

Maddisen Turner and Janae Smith have been selected to play in the GHAGBA All Star Game. It is a huge honor for the girls to be selected, and for Westside to have two players in one All Star game is remarkable. Also at this game, our very own Marah Portier will be awarded a $500 scholarship recognizing her as the area's top manager and team player.

Maddisen Turner has also been selected for another All Star Game. Maddisen will be playing in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All Stargame in San Antonio on May 22. She is the second Westside Basketball Player to ever be selected to this game. If you want to attend this game please contact Coach Gillespie for the details.

Maddisen Turner was also selected to the TABC All State Team. Again, she is only the second basketball player ever to be selected for this prestigious honor. She is considered to be one of the 20 best players in the entire state of Texas. What a huge accomplishment.

Maddisen Turner, Sentreal Gregory, and Kirbee Celestine were all selected for the TABC All Region Team. We have never had more than two athletes make this team in any given calendar year. For us to have three was a testament to our teams success and hard work.

"I am so proud of all of the players," Coach Gillespie said. "I am also happy that these three were selected for some individual recognition as they are more than deserving."

We also received many great things from the 20-6A All District meeting.

COOKING UP CHANGE

Congratulations go to Westside's Culinary Program for winning the "Cooking Up Change" competition, sponsored by Aramark Food Nutrition Services and The Healthy Schools Campaign. This is our second year in row winning this competition and look forward to returning to Washington D.C. in June to represent Westside, HISD and the State of Texas. Jalien Noel, Jose Acosta, and Briseida Salas made up Team Westside.

The winning menu for us this year: Cajun Chicken Lollipop with Black Bean Rice, Twisted Texas Cabbage and Greens, Pineapple Crumble

The students received trophies, medals, knife bags sets and a trip to D.C. to compete at the Department of Education.  In addition to the competition, the students will have the opportunity to present their ideas to members of Congress on how we can create healthy and exciting lunch meals for students.

CHOICES CORNER: ALCOHOL POISONING

To wrap up this month's discussion on alcohol awareness, I wanted to address a very serious topic: alcohol poisoning.  Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant; so, drinking too much or too fast can slow some bodily functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, or breathing to a dangerous level thus causing the drinker to lose consciousness.  Possible signs of alcohol poisoning include unconscious or semiconscious state, slow breathing (eight or fewer breaths per minute or lapses between breaths more than eight seconds), cold, clammy, pale or bluish skin, and a strong odor of alcohol on the breath and coming from the skin.

After recognizing the signs of alcohol poisoning, here is what do to next: call 911 immediately, gently turn the person on his or her left side and stay with the person until the medical help arrives.  It is very important to talk to your teen about alcohol poisoning and what to do if they are faced with the issue.  Most importantly, please stress to them not to leave their friend alone to "sleep it off".

In the case of Carson Starkey, a college student who passed away due to alcohol poisoning from a fraternity initiation, the decision to let him sleep it off proved to be fatal.  After his death, his parents worked with a Texas Senator to create the Texas 911 Lifeline Law.  This law states that a person under 21 won't be charged by the police for possessing or consuming alcohol if the person calls 911 because someone might have alcohol poisoning.  The immunity applies to the person who called for medical assistance, only if the caller remains on the scene until assistance arrives.  Please talk to your teens about this important information and if you have any questions, please contact me: mparsley@council-houston.org.

We value your feedback!
