WESTSIDE WISHES
Debbie Rhoden is chairing the Westside High School Spring Fundraiser, Westside Wishes! The PTO has asked teachers and staff, "If you could have anything for your classroom and/or students you wanted, what would it be?" Westside teachers and staff came up with quite a list of items that will aid their teaching and classrooms, and will further provide WHS students the opportunity to learn and grow with new materials, field trips, improvements to the school and so much more! Click here for a complete list.
We want to fulfill all Westside Wishes, but we need your help. Our goal is to raise $25,000 to cover all the wishes for our teachers and staff. With an enrollment of almost 2,800 students, we can exceed this goal if every student gave $10! What are you passionate about? Where would you like your money to go? You can choose and let us know. Any amount you can contribute will be much appreciated. Imagine how powerful we can be if Westside stands together to make our school better. With your help we can make Westside Wishes come true! Click here for more details.

SHATTERED DREAMS PROGRAM RETURNS
With the support of Harris Health System, Ben Taub Hospital, Dettling Funeral Home, and area first-responders, Westside is participating in a program called Shattered Dreams. If you are unaware of purpose of the program, a description from their Facebook page is below.
"Shattered Dreams is a two-day, school-based program that promotes responsible decision-making among high school students regarding underage drinking and impaired driving (driving after drinking or riding with a drinking driver) by showing them how irresponsible choices can end all dreams. The Shattered Dreams program emphasizes the results of alcohol-related crashes: the shattered dreams of those who drive after drinking, the innocent victims, and their friends and families."
Westside's senior class will participate in the two day program that consists of a mock car crash and an assembly. Thirty seniors will participate in the scene and stay the night at Ben Taub. During the assembly, our seniors will hear from guest speakers and their classmates who participated in the scene.

CHOICES CORNER: SHATTERED DREAMS
Despite declines in the number of young people involved in drunk driving fatalities, on average, more than three people under the age of 21 die each day in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. This Thursday and Friday, we are having a very special event, here at Westside, called Shattered Dreams. This is a two-day program designed to educate students, parents, and the community about the serious issue of underage drinking and driving, by providing a realistic experience and encouraging them to make positive choices. It involves the dramatization of an alcohol-related accident staged in front of the school along with more impactful programming. We are lucky to have this on our campus and hope that you will continue the conversation with your teens about the extreme dangers of underage drinking.
Another exciting event is coming up on March 27. We are having a free screening of the documentary "Finding Kind". The filmmakers met in college and set out on a cross country journey to learn more about why the mean-girl phenomenon is occurring. Along the way, they interview all kinds of people and learn about their lives and experiences on the subject. To quote the film: "We may not all be beautiful, we may not all be smart, we may not all be talented, but we can all be kind." The message of the film focuses on just that, the importance of choosing kindness over hate.
Click here for the film's trailer. Please join us at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 27, in the mini theater for food, discussion, and to watch a very impactful film. RSVP to mparsley@houstonisd.org.
