COACH GILLESPIE SAYS THANK YOU TO
WESTSIDE COMMUNITY

From all of us in the Westside Girls Basketball Program we just wanted to say thank you for your support.

Through every round of the playoffs, we had a huge following and crowd there to support us.  I have always been so proud of my school, but never has it reached the depth that is has through the playoffs.  Often times we were in Katy, playing against a Katy team, and our crowd was louder, prouder, and more representative of the great values and joy that pulse through our school and community.  Thank you a million times over, it was an amazing ride...  We honestly could not have done it without you there believing in us, as we believed in you.

Your Westside Wolves basketball team just wrapped up their season with a Bi-District Championship, Area Championship, Regional Quarterfinals Championship, & Regional Semifinals Championship in the state playoffs.

SENIOR EARNS EAGLE SCOUT

While most students were planning out their Valentine's Day, senior Nicholas T. Lee completed the installation of a trellis screen structure and raised garden beds in the school-yard garden outside of the Culinary Institute at Westside. This fulfilled the requirements for achieving the Eagle Scout rank, the Boys Scouts of America's highest honor.  Nicholas is a member of Troop 730 that meets at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Houston. Since August of 2014, he has coordinated with Westside faculty and his troop leaders to design a project that would meet the needs of the school.

While he could have chosen to make this contribution anywhere, he chose to give back to Westside where he joins a growing list of Eagle Scouts and Gold Award (of the Girl Scouts)recipients who have fulfilled their service-project requirements through service on campus.

With help from fellow Westside Wolves and his parents, Nicholas realized the design with two days of hard labor.  The result is an aesthetically-pleasing and functional structure in the garden that will serve the Urban Agriculture, Culinary Arts and Environmental Science programs for many years.  Westside is grateful to the Lee Family for this contribution.  And congratulations to Nicholas for completing one of the last tasks to earn the Eagle Scout award!

WILLIAMS CROWNED INTERNATIONAL MISS TEEN TEXAS

Fallon Williams, a junior in the South 2 house. She is traveling with the first off-Broadway production of Disney's Lion's King, in Atlanta.  Fallon Williams was crowned International Miss Teen Texas last weekend in Dallas.

WESTSIDE WISHES

Debbie Rhoden is chairing the Westside High School Spring Fundraiser, Westside Wishes!  The PTO has asked teachers and staff, "If you could have anything for your classroom and/or students you wanted, what would it be?"  Westside teachers and staff came up with quite a list of items that will aid their teaching and classrooms, and will further provide WHS students the opportunity to learn and grow with new materials, field trips, improvements to the school and so much more!  Click here for a complete list.

We want to fulfill all Westside Wishes, but we need your help.  Our goal is to raise $25,000 to cover all the wishes for our teachers and staff.  With an enrollment of almost 2,800 students, we can exceed this goal if every student gave $10! What are you passionate about?  Where would you like your money to go?  You can choose and let us know.  Any amount you can contribute will be much appreciated.  Imagine how powerful we can be if Westside stands together to make our school better.  With your help we can make Westside Wishes come true! Click here for more details.

CHOICES CORNER: EVERYBODY ISN'T DOING IT

The Choices topic for March is alcohol awareness.  I wanted to start this month off with some good news: it looks like teenagers are getting the message about underage drinking.  A poll of high school teens found that 77% said that they don't drink alcohol.  According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), who released the poll, 69% of teens said they don't drink, and another 8% said that they used to drink but don't anymore.

When asked why they don't drink, teens said their top five reasons were: because it is illegal, the effect on their health, the effect on their grades, the fact that their parents don't approve, and that they don't want to be like their peers who drink.  Furthermore, according to the poll of 695 students, more than half said that they would be less inclined to be friends with or date someone who is an underage drinker.  So, when your teenager uses the excuse "everyone else is doing it", now you can tell them why that isn't true.

This Wednesday, we are having a special Choices Chat starting at 9 a.m. at Pecan Creek Grille right around the corner from Westside.  I will give a presentation on adolescent brain development and the effects on the choices your children and teens are making.  Before and after the presentation, we will have plenty of time for questions and discussion.  I look forward to seeing you there!
