BLACK HISTORY MONTH GRAND FINALE WEEK

Westside has been celebrating Black History Month, as well as all of the cultural diversity at Westside and across our nation.  During the month, the students have been enjoying the many activities that have been planned thanks to Ms. Andrea Barras.   "Grand Finale Week" is here and the houses have done an incredible job of presenting the accomplishments of so many through the decorations in their house entrances.  Each house showcased their house focus through their display.

East 2 had a Digital Media display of famous Black Americans throughout media that have shaped and continue to shape our world.  It was fascinating to see the list of inventions that North 1 had along with their visual presentation of those inventions.  South 2 embraced the many accomplishments of famous musicians and artists.  North 2 had a display focusing on the medical contributions, while East 1 focused on Dr. King himself and the fact that we all need to continue to have a dream and focus on it.

Thank you house secretaries, deans, faculty and students for embracing our contest. A special thank you to our PTO for their support of the houses and the decorating costs.

This Wednesday, students will be treated to a Poetry Set, a performance by Westside's Jazz Band,  Steppers, and our own JROTC.  What a great month we have been having here at Westside celebrating the contributions of so many!

BASKETBALL TEAMS NEED YOU IN THE STANDS

Both of our basketball teams are in the playoffs, but there is a problem...both teams are playing at the same time! That is why we need you in the stands more than ever. Our family will have to split up and cheer at different sites.

That is where YOU come in! This Tuesday night at 7 p.m., the girls enter the third round of the playoffs against 7 Lakes, while the boys enter the first round against Cinco Ranch.  If you want to cheer on the boys, they are playing at Katy Taylor High School, while the girls take the court at the Merrell Center.
STUDENTS CELEBRATE CHINESE NEW YEAR

Westside teacher, Bo Sun, who teaches Chinese levels 1 - 4 treated her class and others to a Chinese New Year Celebration last Friday, February 20.

Her students learned how to make traditional dumplings while enjoying direct streaming celebrations from China on the SmartBoard.

The dumplings were delicious and enjoyed by her students, and some of the dumplings made their way around campus to teachers and administrators!

What a treat!

WRESTLING PLACES AT STATE

Making it to the State Championship is quite an honor, but it is even more satisfying when you place. TyRae Carter and Myles Hampton both earned All State honors by placing 5th at the UIL STATE Tournament. Both gentlemen are standing on the right in the picture above and below.

Elijah Dixon was one match short of placing and finished top 8.

"I am very proud of the boys and their accomplishments this past weekend," Coach Froehlich said.

In addition, former Westside Wrestling Coach Ron Baker was inducted to the Texas Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Honor this past weekend, as well. The bulk of Coach Baker's career as a wrestling coach was spent at Westside and this honor is heavily due to his time as the Head Coach at Westside High School. We applaud Coach Baker for this honor and thank him for his dedication as a Wolf.

Come check out Shades of Blue this Tuesday, in the Commons at 7 p.m. Enjoy a jazz club-style performance from the WHS Big Band/Jazz combo & Percussion Ensembles.

CHOICES CORNER: DANGERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

After last week's article on the benefits of social media, I wanted to follow up with a few dangers to look out for.  As we all know, social media is extremely influential on a teen's life and perspective.  As many as 75% of high school students stated that seeing another teen partying via social media sites like Instagram or Twitter made them want to engage in the same activity.  This is dangerous because teens are not only seeing their friends' profiles, but are also seeing adults engaging in adult behavior that teens are not ready for.

Another danger to look out for is online pornography.  Research shows that 7 out of 10 teens have been accidently exposed to pornography online and the average child is 11 years old when they see their first pornographic image online.  These statistics are extremely frightening and because of this particular issue, it is very important to monitor the browsing history on your teen's computer, phone, tablet and utilize the parental controls that are available through your internet provider, computer systems and televisions.
