ALUMNI BREAKFAST

This Thursday, we have invited our Alumni to come back to campus for our annual Alumni Breakfast. The breakfast will take place in our library from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

Teachers and staff will get the opportunity to catch up with their former students.

We have also invited those who are interested to speak to our current WHS students about the college experience. The response from our alumni has been enthusiastic and overwhelming! We are looking forward to a fun filled and educational morning.
PSAT PARENT MEETING

Save the date! We will have our annual PSAT results meeting for parents and students in grades 9-11 on Wednesday, January 14.

We will distribute and discuss your child's PSAT results and talk about preparing for the college entrance exams. We will meet in the mini theatre from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

In addition to distributing individual results and discussing the PSAT, we'll cover college admission tests (SAT and ACT), and discuss when your child should take the exams, including how to prep for the best results.

Parents, our students are well on their way to becoming adults but still need your involvement. We hope to see you on January 14!

AGRICULTURE STUDENTS PUT OUT SPREAD

The Urban Agriculture class prepared its final exam on Tuesday, December 16, by creating food for the Fall Semester Yuletide Celebration.

Students served homemade, organic, locally-sourced dishes while they shared their experiences in the school garden, photos of their home gardens, and the topics of their research proposals.

The Urban Ag students also provided tours of the garden they cultivate throughout the school year. It was a bit chilly, so the tours were expedited a little.

NOW THAT'S SOME GOOD GUMBO, PAW-PAW!

As the semester was winding down and the final exams were stacked on the teachers' desks, a pick-me-up was definitely needed. With tons of grading to do, the smell of food filled the hallways and lured the Westside faculty and staff out of there rooms to feast on some homemade chicken and sausage gumbo, courtesy of the Vinet Family.

The Vinet Family is new at WHS this year and offered to treat our staff to some authentic Louisiana Gumbo. The effort was sweet and the gumbo was spicy! The Westside faculty and staff send them sincerest thanks!

THIS CODE IS NO SECRET

During the week of December 8, all HISD schools were encouraged to give their students a taste of what programmers do for a living by participating in the Hour of Code initiative.

The event challenges students in grades K-12 to create code for at least one hour during Computer Science Education Week. Its goal is to "demystify code and show that computer science is not rocket science," said Hadi Partovi, the founder and CEO of Code.org. "Anybody can learn the basics."

Each classroom that registers and participates is eligible to win one of several prizes, including a class trip to Washington D.C.

CHOICES CORNER: NEW YEAR, SAME YOU!

Happy New Year Westside! Can you believe it is already 2015? The beginning of a new year gives us a chance to start over, wipe the slate clean, and reflect on the previous year and look ahead to the next. According to health.com, each January, around one in three Americans resolve to better themselves in some way. However, according to a 2002 study, while about 75% of people stick to their goals for at least a week, less than half (46%) are still on target six months later. Therefore, if you are making a list of New Year's resolutions for yourself, make sure they are attainable, easy to maintain, and realistic.

Although there are many great New Year's resolution ideas out there, my favorite was one that I heard last year. When my coworker was asked what her New Year's resolution was, she responded with a smile and said, "My resolution is to keep doing what I am doing. It has really been working well for me this past year." I love the positive attitude that she modeled to the group. The New Year isn't always about a need to change- it can also be a time to reflect upon what you are doing right in your life, to pat yourself on the back and to be proud of what you have accomplished. I know each and every one of you has something to be proud of as you look back on 2014, and I encourage you to share these sentiments with your teens. If spending more time with your kids is one of your resolutions, this is a great way to start!
