When HISD principals walked into their monthly meeting at the District Office on Dec. 3, they were treated to gift baskets, glittering bows, and even original works of art.

Mrs. Stewart received an original piece created by students from Ms. Mims' ceramics class.

POWER UP!

What that means is that we want every student to have their paperwork and insurance payment in by the end of November. In January when the laptops come, we don't want any Wolves left behind.

Parents don't have to be here to turn in the paperwork, which is a form that can be printed off of the Westside website or here. Students can turn in their paperwork and $25 cash or money order.

FRESHMAN BALANCES STUDIES WITH GYMNASTICS

Ian Gunther isn't your typical freshman. After school, many freshman grab a bag of chips, play some video games, and then hit the books. Ian doesn't have much down time to play video games as he focuses a lot of time and effort on gymnastics, but remains vigilant with his studies.

While most freshman athletes compete on school teams, Ian's sport of choice isn't offered on campus. That doesn't stop this young man from doing what he loves.

This isn't just a casual hobby, Ian is a competitive gymnast. In fact, the freshman competed in the Valeri Luikin Invitational Men's Gymnastics Competition in Frisco,Texas, this past weekend. He didn't just participate, he walked away with 5 medals and placed 3rd 'All Around' out of 77 competitors from as far as Brazil.

This was Ian's first meet of the 2014-15 season and was an amazing start! Way to make us all Wolf Proud!

THIS CODE IS NO SECRET

During the week of December 8, all HISD schools were encouraged to give their students a taste of what programmers do for a living by participating in the Hour of Code initiative.

The event challenges students in grades K-12 to create code for at least one hour during Computer Science Education Week. Its goal is to "demystify code and show that computer science is not rocket science," said Hadi Partovi, the founder and CEO of Code.org. "Anybody can learn the basics."

Each classroom that registers and participates is eligible to win one of several prizes, including a class trip to Washington D.C.

SONGS OF MATH FILLED THE HALLS...

As the semester winds down and the holidays approach, every calculus student knows what that means...caroling!

These aren't just any carols, but Calculus Carols! Mr. French and his Calculus classes sang in the halls and visited other math classes to spread their mathematical cheer.

PRIDE BRINGS HOME SOME HARDWARE

The Pride Dance officers competed with their dance solos at Humble High School, last week.  Juliette Mudd, Nia Hall and Christina Campbell received division one solos. Lauren Clemons and Baylee Nelson tied for 2nd place!

CHOICES CORNER: EXERCISE YOUR STRESS AWAY

Exercise is a very powerful way to relieve stress.  Exercise is an outlet for frustration, it can be a distraction, it improves your health, and it can help you build a positive social support system.  It is also considered vital for maintaining your mental health.  This means that you should encourage your teens who are about to take their finals to get some exercise this week because it is helps improve alertness, concentration, and enhance overall cognitive functioning (source).

Furthermore, exercise decreases cortisol, a stress hormone, and increases endorphins, which are chemicals in your body that give your mood a natural boost.  Research shows that physical activity may be linked to lowering physiological reactivity to stress. What does that mean? Simply put, those who get more exercise may be less affected by the stress that they face. Therefore, in addition to all of the other benefits, exercise may supply some type of immunity toward future stress as well as a way to cope with any current stress you are experiencing.  Do you want to relieve some of your holiday stress? Get out there and get active!
