Please join the Westside Band and Orchestra in the Auditorium on Thursday, December 11.  The show starts at 6 p.m., and admission is free!
POWER UP!

What that means is that we want every student to have their paperwork and insurance payment in by the end of November. In January when the laptops come, we don't want any Wolves left behind.

Parents don't have to be here to turn in the paperwork, which is a form that can be printed off of the Westside website or here. Students can turn in their paperwork and $25 cash or money order.

CHOICES CORNER: STRESS MANAGEMENT

As much as we all love the holidays, this can be a stressful time for all of us- especially for our teens. This is why the Choices topic for December is stress management. The pressure of homework, projects, presentations and finals can often times be overwhelming. Therefore, this is a very important time for parents to pay attention, monitor their teen's health, behavior, thoughts or feelings, listen carefully, learn and model stress management skills, and support involvement in clubs, sports and other pro-social activities.

One effective coping strategy for stress is meditation. Meditation is a great way to deal with the multiple stressors we experience daily, including the influx of family members during the holidays. Meditation means to drop everything which is in one's mind and to come to a state where only consciousness and awareness remains.

In order to prepare for meditation, begin by sitting comfortably in a calm and quiet space with your feet flat on the ground. Start by breathing easy from the abdomen, often referred to as "belly breathing". Then, rotate the head in easy, slow circles; change direction and rotate in slow, easy circles. Look up, tilt your head way back, look down, and put your chin to your chest. Next, drop your arms and hands to the side and shake them gently and easily. Raise your feet off of the floor and gently and easily shake the knees. Make sure to straighten your spine while meditating. Practice and repeat two times.

After repeating this twice, close your eyes and try to relax your mind and do not make an effort to think about anything; slowly your mind will clear and relax. Do this for about two minutes and then open your eyes. When you are done, check in with yourself, are you feeling more relaxed and balanced? If you don't right away, with daily practice you will start to see a change within yourself.
