POWER UP!

What that means is that we want every student to have their paperwork and insurance payment in by the end of November. In January when the laptops come, we don't want any Wolves left behind.

Parents don't have to be here to turn in the paperwork, which is a form that can be printed off of the Westside website or here. Students can turn in their paperwork and $25 cash or money order.

PRESEASON HONORS

Sentreal Gregory and Maddisen Turner have been selected to the Greater Houston Area Pre-Season Top 50.

What an honor! There is some of the premier talent in the country, right here in Houston. For Westside to have two student athletes on the list is a huge accomplishment and testament to the hard work and dedication that they both put into the game.

Currently, our girls basketball team has three Division 1 signees. Maddisen Turner has committed to Corpus Christi A&M. Janae Smith and Alexis Adams have both committed to Grambling.

Sending students to the next level is a proud tradition the Westside basketball family works hard to achieve.

AP CHEMISTRY VISITS TREATMENT PLANT

Ms. Ford's AP Chemistry class took a field trip to the Turkey Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant.  The students toured the facility to learn the engineering, biological, and chemical aspects of how the facility is operated.

THEATRE PRODUCTION OF 'A TUNA CHRISTMAS'

Don't Miss Westside's comedic production of "A Tuna Christmas" by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard.

Shows are Thursday, December 4, Friday, December 5, and Saturday, December 6 in the Mini Theatre.

The show starts at 7 p.m., each night. Tickets may be purchased online here, or during lunch.

STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN LEADRSHIP SUMMIT

State Representative Jim Murphy hosted the West Houston Teen Leadership Summit.  Rep. Murphy assembled today's leaders in the field of Business, Communication, Education, Politics, and philanthropy to speak with the leaders of tomorrow, students from 18 local public and private high schools.

Students were given the opportunity to listen to and ask questions of leaders such as Judge Ed Emmett, Rep. Sylvester Turner, Mia Shay, Sherry Fox, Paul Simpson, and many others.

Our Westside students who participated were Meredith Knight, Karina Herrera, Maddie Daniell, Sean Council, and Andrew Hill.

BP LAYS DOWN THE LAW

Mr. Clardy and his classes had the opportunity to take a very interesting field trip to BP. Students participated in three different rotations dealing with the field of law.

In one rotation, students interviewed various attorneys who role played a case dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace. Students then decided if the accused committed the act of sexual harassment.

In another rotation students represented a shoe company while others represented an athlete. Here, students learned the art of negotiation and what contracts truly mean.

In the last rotation, students participated in a trial to determine if cyber-bullying took place on school grounds.

It was a great day had by all. Thank you BP for allowing Westside to be part of your day!
CHOICES CORNER: FAMILY TRADITIONS

In light of Thanksgiving coming up on Thursday, I think it is important to reflect on family traditions. Even if your family doesn't have any traditions yet, it is not too late to start now! Traditions are a key part of family life for multiple reasons, especially as your children are growing up and getting older. First, family traditions create good feelings and special moments to remember. Enjoying these moments together as a group will create positive emotions in each family member. Second, family traditions give every member of the family a stronger sense of belonging. Being a part of a family is more than just living under the same roof or having the same last name. It is about relationships, family bonds, and love. Since family traditions are something that you do together, they strengthen the bonds you have between each other and create new ones.

Family traditions help your teen with his or her identity. Adolescents are struggling to figure out who they are, so knowing that they belong is an important part of this process. Families that encourage their teens to be an active part of it provide a strong foundation for when they are searching and defining their sense of self. Next, family traditions help parents impart and model the family's values to their children. Also, you will find more opportunities to talk to your teen about serious issues and keep the conversation light when you are taking part in a family tradition.

Last, family traditions offer your teen a sense of security. Teens are facing all kinds of hardships these days, so knowing that they have a family to turn to is a powerful tool to use against peer pressure, bullying, and drug and alcohol use. So this Thanksgiving, continue to take part in family traditions, or start new ones. Either way, look at this holiday as a time to spend quality time together as a family, no matter what your family looks like.

Happy Thanksgiving Westside, hope you have a safe and restful holiday!
