HISD ANNOUNCES CULINARY INSTITUTE
OF AMERICA PARTNERSHIP
| |

The Houston Independent School District and The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) announced an educational partnership, last Friday, at Westside High School that will allow students in the culinary arts program to earn a semester of college credit from a world-renowned culinary college.
"HISD is excited to announce a new relationship with The Culinary Institute of America that will feed into the passion our culinary arts students have for cooking and give them more hands-on culinary experience and skills to prepare them for college and a career," HISD Superintendent Dr. Terry Grier said.
Beginning next school year, about 50 juniors and seniors in Westside's culinary arts program can take up to six dual-credit courses with The Culinary Institute of America, which offers associate and bachelor's degrees in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts, culinary science, and applied food studies, as well as certificate programs in culinary arts and wine and beverage studies. This will be the college's first-ever affiliate program with a high school in the United States.
"Through this program, Houston culinary students will have the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school and give themselves a leg up towards rewarding careers in the exciting food world," CIA Provost Mark Erickson said.
The dual-credit courses offered to HISD culinary students will cover culinary fundamentals and offer students hands-on practicums. Students who earn at least a B- or higher in the courses and pass the college's culinary exams will have successfully completed a semester of study at the CIA and qualify for scholarships for the remainder of their four-year bachelor's or two-year associate degree studies. A similar culinary arts program will be added to Davis and Wheatley high schools in 2016 and at Lamar and Milby high schools in 2017.
"We've offered dual-credit courses to our students with local community colleges, but this will be the first time our students in culinary arts will receive credit for actual practicum and hands-on culinary coursework," Westside culinary arts director Chef Reginald Martin said. "Many of our students go on to enroll in post-secondary culinary programs, and some are working in fine restaurants in the greater Houston area."
HISD culinary arts instructors will also receive training from CIA faculty at the college's main campus in New York. The college's faculty will visit the high school culinary arts programs to collaborate with teachers and assist with designing a new kitchen facility for Westside's culinary arts program.
The Westside culinary program currently has partnerships with the Texas Restaurant Association and the National Restaurant Association in addition to its corporate partnership with Outback Steakhouse.

Tuesday night, November 18 is the PowerUp Night! This is part of our 100% Power Up Push!
What that means is that we want every student to have their paperwork and insurance payment in by the end of November.
In January when the laptops come, we don't want any Wolves left behind. PowerUp Night! is one of the many opportunities to take care of the paperwork and the insurance payment of $25. Drop by any time between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., in S100.
Parents don't have to be here to turn in the paperwork, which is a form that can be printed off of the Westside website or here. Students can turn in their paperwork and $25 cash or money order.

CHOICES CORNER: FAT TALK FREE WEEK
|
|
Fat talk is any statement that reinforces the "thin ideal" standard of beauty and contributes to women and men's dissatisfaction with their bodies.
So, have you ever said to yourself: "I am so fat", "Someone my size can't wear that", "I wish I had more curves" or "Please cut my arm out of that photo, I look fat"? Or, have you ever said the following about someone else: "She is too big to be wearing that" or "Wow, he has gotten fat"? If you have, then you are a fat talk pro. Unfortunately, most of us are.
What can we do as a society to eradicate fat talk? Start with changing the conversation with yourself. If we can work on eliminating the harshness with which we use to talk to ourselves, there will be a culture shift in what the "ideal" is supposed to look like. Let's celebrate all of our accomplishments, our families, our jobs, and what we are thankful for instead of focusing on whether or not we will ever have curves like Kim Kardashian or be as fit as J.J. Watt. Let's wake up every day and look in the mirror and say "Wow, I am so glad I woke up as ME today". Wouldn't that be a great way to start the day?
Starting today, I invite you to join me and participate in Fat Talk Free Week this week, and encourage those around you to do so as well. This week, let's promise to eliminate fat talk from conversation with friends, family, coworkers, and most importantly ourselves. Starting today, let's strive for a healthy ideal which focuses on health, not weight or size. Lastly, let's celebrate the things about ourselves and the people around us that have nothing to do with how we look, but have everything to do with our accomplishments, our skills and our own unique qualities. Click here to print the pledge card and sign it. Once you do so, I encourage you to post it on your refrigerator, locker or classroom door to show others that you made the commitment to end fat talk. It is a simple act that could change a culture.
Just a reminder! This Thursday, I am hosting a seminar for students starting at 8 a.m., (before late start Thursday) in S100. The seminar is titled "Love the Skin You're In" and we will be discussing body image, media messages, self-confidence, eating disorders and more. Students can receive credit appeal and/or community service for attending.
Please see the Choices webpage for more information.
