100% POWER
UP PUSH!

Throughout the month of November, Westside will be conducting its 100% Power Up Push! What that means is that we want every student to have their paperwork and insurance payment in by the end of November. In January when the laptops come, we don't want any Wolves left behind. There are many opportunities to take care of the paperwork and the one time insurance payment of $25.

Parents don't have to be here to turn in the paperwork, which is a form that can be printed off of the Westside website or here. Students can turn in their paperwork and $25 cash or money order.

There are 3 ways students can take care of this:

  • First - during their lunch period any day of the week
  • Second - after school before 3:30 p.m.
  • Last - Late Start Thursdays - They can come in between 7:45 a.m. - 9:15 a.m.

DANCE WITH INERTIANS!

Inertia Dance Company invites you to participate in our annual show, House of Hip-Hop! Participants will have the opportunity to perform on stage at Westside High School with Inertia Dance Company.

Our older participants will be given the chance to take a technique class with a guest choreographer, while the younger kids will be entertained by the Inertians!

AP ENVIRONMENTAL GETS IN IT!

While most classes are theoretical, the Advanced Placement Environmental Science classes are hands on. Many times, the classroom is...well, not in the classroom.

Mrs. Klein makes sure the learning experience is just that, an experience. The most recent adventure began with a bus ride to Pasedena to the Armand Bayou Nature Center.

Activities on the field trip included helping rebuild the prairie by planting various vegetation, as well as a plunge in the bayou to net some wildlife. Of course, it was a catch and release situation.

CHOICES CORNER: THIN IDEAL VS. HEALTHY IDEAL

In our society today, we are bombarded with media messages telling us how we are supposed to look, dress, act, speak, etc. Especially since technology is omnipresent, it is almost impossible to hide from these messages.

Our society focuses on something called a "Thin Ideal" which implies that a certain look results in success, happiness, or confidence. This ideal negates so many qualities that truly define who we are because it solely focuses on appearances and what is on the surface, instead of what is on the inside. It is important that we teach our teens the "Healthy Ideal" instead. This ideal comes in all shapes and sizes and looks different for everyone. It is a way of life achieved in mind, body and spirit. Furthermore, it places emphasis on relationships, nutrition, exercise and self-esteem that positively impact our body image and our confidence. Most importantly, the "Healthy Ideal" doesn't include fat talk. Next week's article will address fat talk and a cool way we can all work to eradicate it.

On Thursday, November 20, I will be hosting a seminar for students starting at 8 a.m., before late start Thursday, in S100. The seminar is titled "Love the Skin You're In" and we will be discussing body image, media messages, self-confidence, eating disorders and more. Students can receive credit appeal and/or community service for attending.
