PTO MEETING

Attention Parents! Grab a friend and join us for the PTO Meeting on Tuesday, November 4, at 7 p.m.,
in S100. Please note the change in usual venue due to Election Night voting taking place in the Library.

We will serve refreshments and have some social time from 7-7:15 p.m.,  followed by our committee reports, including a re-cap of the super-successful Homecoming Dance and discussion about upcoming activities.

Also, Principal Peggi Stewart will give us an update on school news. The second half of the meeting will feature a presentation by Meredith Parsley, our Choices Program counselor. She will tell us about the Choices Program, a prevention and counseling program at WHS that is offered through the Counsel on Alcohol and Drugs Houston.  Ms. Parsley will be sharing data and insights about our student community based on a recent survey of Westside students.

All are welcome. Hope to see you there. Plan to stay to the end for the door prize drawing!

Our amazing Homecoming Week was capped off with a dance to remember! The Fall Ball was an huge success, thanks to a jazzed up student body and some helpful parents.  Below are a few pictures from the dance.

CHOICES CORNER: BODY IMAGE

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human services, 90% of people suffering from eating disorders are between the ages of 12 to 25. Furthermore, between 5 and 10 million women in the U.S. currently suffer from eating disorders. Lastly, Gear magazine reports that 1 in 6 cases of eating disorders diagnosed are in men.

The two most well-known eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Anorexia is defined as refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height and the weight loss leads to body weight that is less than 85% of what is to be expected. Bulimia is typically characterized by frequent episodes of excessive food intake followed by self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, fasting, or excessive exercise to avoid weight gain. Bulimia nervosa patients are typically within normal weight range and restrict their total caloric consumption between binges.

Patients with eating disorders are usually ashamed of their eating problems, which leads to many individuals acting on their eating disorder in secret. Because eating disorders are so prevalent, especially with the adolescent population, the Choices topic for November is body image. Throughout the month, we will talk about self-image, confidence, self-injury, eating disorders, and learn how to love the skin you are in.

Tomorrow, November 4, I will be giving a presentation on teenage brain development and student survey results from the Choices survey we conducted at the end of last year. The PTO meeting starts at 7 p.m. in S100 and all are welcome.

On Thursday, November 20th, I am hosting a seminar for students starting at 8:00 a.m., before late start Thursday, in S100. The seminar is titled "Love the Skin You're In" and we will be discussing body image, media messages, self-confidence, eating disorders and more. Students can receive credit appeal and/or community service for attending.

Please see the Choices webpage for more information.
