LACROSSE TEAM PASSES ON KNOWLEDGE

Coach Dwayne Spruell and the boys came out on Sunday and coached 20 new players from various elementary schools in the feeder pattern for two plus hours in the rain.  They were fantastic with the kids and really got the boys fired up to be playing lacrosse.

The kick-off event to boost interest was a huge success with both the boys and their parents, plus our lacrosse team.  Parents of our team members and parents of the elementary boys were instrumental in getting the young boys excited about lacrosse, not only now, but at the high school level.

NEW STUDENT GROUP

A new student led group has been formed to bring a voice to all HISD students. The focus of this group is bring up student issues and concerns to help make HISD even better for students.

What does this mean for Westside? Currently, we are forming the group from Westside, so we are looking for interested students to become part of the congress and serve on various committees. All grade levels are welcome to join.

How do you get involved? There will be a student interest meeting October 21, 2014 during A and B Lunch in room S144.  If you can't make the meeting or have specific questions, email our sponsor, Mrs. Garrett at SGARRET3@houstonisd.org.

Check out the website at hisdstudentcongress.org. Sign up and see all of the committees.

CHOICES CORNER: RELATIONSHIPS

One of the most important keys to a successful relationship is good communication. Because humans aren't born knowing how to communicate, communication is something we learn. Therefore, teens learn their communication patterns from their environment growing up. This means that as parents and guardians, you are modeling your communication styles to your children and they are in turn posturing their own communication styles after yours.

Two techniques we encourage parents and teens to use are "I" statements and communication clearings. Both of these tools are very effective when attempting to be assertive without putting the receiver on the defensive. Let's look at the difference. Instead of automatically putting the receiver on the defensive by saying "You make me so mad when you come home past curfew!" try, "When you come home past curfew, I feel concerned. The story I make up is that something has gone wrong and that you aren't okay. I ask that you please come home by curfew like you have done many times in the past." Although it may seem long and robotic, try this format at home when trying to discuss something with your teen, partner or even a friend. You may be surprised at the lack of eye rolling that usually occurs.

Just a reminder, part two of the Dating Safety Seminar for students is this Thursday in S100, starting at 8 a.m. Students can receive credit appeal and community service for attending.
